Schumacher Stanley

SCHUMACHER

Stanley Stanford, QC

June 12, 1933 - October 10, 2020

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of a  wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, Stanley Stanford Schumacher, age 87 years, from dementia in Calgary, Alberta.
Stan was born in Hanna, Alberta, at the nearest hospital to his parents’ home where they lived in Sunnynook, and where his father was the Alberta Wheat Pool agent. A few years later, they moved to Dorothy until Stan finished grade eight when the family moved - house and all - up the river to Drumheller, where Stan finished high school.  In 1959, Stan graduated from the University of British Columbia with both a law degree and Bachelor of Commerce. While a student at UBC, he joined the  Canadian Officer’s Training Corps (COTC).  During the third phase of this training, Stan was selected as one of only four across Canada to be picked to go to Germany,  serving with the Royal Canadian Dragoons, as part of the British Army of the Rhine. Stan credited this training with causing the most significant changes in his life - confidence and the ability to be analytical, and most importantly, it helped him to overcome his extreme shyness.  He believed this new found self-assurance allowed him to go on to  “do what he wanted to do” which would eventually be to enter the political arena.
After graduation, Stan articled with Eldon Woolliams Q. C.  in Calgary. He was called to the bar in 1960.  Due to his father’s illness, in 1962, Stan joined Knaut + Knaut in Camrose for two years, returning to Drumheller in 1964. In 1966, he joined W. R. Sandercock Q. C.
In 1967, a redistribution of the electoral boundaries created the new federal political riding of Palliser. Stan announced his intention to run in the newly formed Palliser riding, which included Drumheller and parts of Calgary.
On June 22, 1968, Stan married Virginia Mae Brodie of Calgary. Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau set an election date for June 25, 1968, but this did not stand in the way of wedding plans.  Stan won the election.  Mr. Sandercock was not too happy having a partner who spent most of his time out of the province. In 1971, Pat Madden joined the firm, taking much of the pressure and workload off Stan’s shoulders.  In the election of 1979, Stan ran as an Independent, because of internal conflicts, and lost to Gordon Taylor,  the PC candidate.
Stan has long been a member of the Masonic Lodge in Camrose and Drumheller, and in 1966 he and other local members joined the Shriners of Al Azhar Temple in Calgary culminating in his being elected Potentate in 1985 for the entire province.
Stan decided to run in the 1986 provincial election and won the election with Don Getty as Premier. Stan was a Member of the Legislative Assembly for Alberta until 1997, with four years as Deputy Speaker and four years as the first elected Speaker of the House. This prestigious office afforded him the opportunity to meet and travel with innumerable legislators from around the world.
Throughout the years, Stan continued his work in law and the community, eventually creating Schumacher, Gough & Co. In 2003, Stan was again presented with the Queen’s Jubilee Award.

Stan was predeceased by his parents, Louis Peter and Gladys Geraldine (nee Knudson) of Drumheller, and his sister, Jean Sakal (wife of Bill) of Calgary. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years Virginia, his children David (wife Lala Wood) and Sandra, his grandchildren Noah, Sadie, Paloma, and Shalin, his sister June Bittman of Richmond, WA, and sister-in-law Beverley Snell of Calgary, and many nieces and nephews and good friends.   Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, there will only be a private function. Cremation has already taken place. Messages of condolence may be left for the family at www.myalternatives.ca.

TAUBERT
Arthur

November 18, 1933 - October 26, 2020

Arthur Taubert, from Hussar, beloved husband of Dianne, passed away after a short illness at the age of 86.
Art was born on the family farm NE of Hussar, where he spent the first 13 years of his life. He attended Fairyvale and Severn Creek schools. Where, unfortunately he and his brothers had to walk uphill both ways to and from school and in a blizzard all the time. His family farm was close to his Grandparents farm and he spent lots of time with his aunts and uncles, who were more like brother and sisters. In 1947, he packed up his mom and his brothers and moved to Rosebud and became the man of the family. To help support the family he worked for several different farmers and ranchers in the Rosebud area. At a very young age he was already a provider.
His teen years and early adulthood were spent in Rosebud where he met many of his lifelong friends. He loved to tell stories of all his adventures and misadventures, he would get a twinkle in his eye and a grin from ear to ear. Rosebud held a very special place in his heart. He married Dianne on October 28, 1961 in Rosebud. They lived and worked in Calgary, he stayed in the city in the winter and went to Hussar in the spring to farm land rented to him by his Grandpa Kaiser. They bought their home place in 1965, raised their family there and continued to live there, it was where he was the happiest. Surrounded by his land, his animals, his friends and his family. His door was always open, day and night, for friends and family to stop in for a coffee and a visit.
Art served on numerous boards, including, the Hussar Seed Cleaning Plant, Hussar Credit Union Board, Delegates Advisory Committee for the Alberta Wheat Pool, Ag Society, Booster Club, Curling Club and was a leader in the Hussar Small Motors 4-H Club. He loved his time on the Pancake wagon for the Hussar Summerdaze weekend. He spent many hours working and playing in the curling and the skating rinks.
Art was a true farmer, he cared for his land and his animals with all his heart. He had many cherished pets over the years. He passed along his love of animals and the land to his family. Art took in many strays over the years and he made them feel like the most wanted of beings. He taught his kids that every life is precious whether it be cranky bantam chickens, orphaned gophers, ducks, rabbits, kittens or calves. He would work tirelessly to save an animal and truly hated to see one suffer. Building his farm from the ground up, watching Kevin continue to build on its foundation was such a huge source of pride to him.
Having his family all gathered together was one of his biggest joys. He truly believed that a measure of a man was his honesty and his work ethic.
Besides his loving wife Dianne, Art is survived by his children Kristen (Peter) Anderson, Kim (Alvin) Sandum, Kevin (Carey) Taubert, Koren (Brad) McDougald. His grandkids, Ciara (Riley), Raine (Russell), Liam, Wacy, Reese, Owen, Camryn and Elli-Anna. Brother Cookie (Joanne) Taubert, sisters-in-law, Marie, Hazel, Colleen, Cec, June, Joy and brother-in-law Jerry. Numerous nieces, nephews and many he considered family.
He was predeceased by his adored mother Katie, brothers Ted and Eddie. His father Felix. Numerous brothers and sisters in-law.
Due to Covid19 a private service will be held on November 7th at the family farm.
We would like to thank all the staff at the Drumheller Health Centre for their outstanding care and kindness. The staff truly went above and beyond to make his last days comfortable. He hated to be a burden and they never made him feel that way. He teased them all up until the very end.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Drumheller Humane Society, or the Hussar Agricultural Society.

“Ann Eileen”

November 4, 1932 - November 9, 2020

It is with profound sadness and deepest sorrow the family of Ann Eileen Edmondson announce her passing on November 9th, 2020 in Cranbrook, British Columbia at the age of 88. With her son Brian and daughter-in- law Velma at her side. Right to the end” Mom, Grandma, Auntie, and Friend” lived life on her terms, strong and independent to the fullest.
Ann was born in Sibbald, Alberta on November 4th, 1932 to Alexander and Helen Walger. A family of 1 elder brother John, 3 elder sisters Minnie, Lydia, Ida, and 2 younger brothers Art and Howard all whom she now joins. The family was raised near Bittern Lake, Alberta where the Walger farm remains today in the care of 3rd generation Rick Walger.
Ann married Roy Edmondson, from Elnora, Alberta in 1959. Following him across Canada while he served his country in the Armed Forces. Their union resulted in a son, Brian.
Finally settling in Drumheller, Alberta in 1975 where sadly Roy was taken from her too soon in 1977. Their life together may have been short, but it was full of love. Ann remained in Drumheller for 38 years. She grew to know a great number of people in the area as she walked everywhere. She loved to chat and had an opinion on most everything.
Ann loved to cook and bake, particularly for others, “There’s always food in my home”. During the years prior to Brian venturing forward in life, “Moms” was a gathering place for his friends for a fine meal, a stern lecture, and gentle guidance. She was known as a “Mom” to everyone. Later in life she took up the sport of curling and every winter enjoyed watching all the events on T.V. leading up to the Scotties and Brier. A circle of friends would take turns hosting canasta night. Please don’t phone when Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune are on! In 2013 Ann moved to Cranbrook, B.C., to be closer to Brian and Velma (whom she so dearly loved). In Cranbrook she again owned and maintained her own home. Ann would live no other way, independent, never to be a burden, life to the fullest.
Ann never truly left Alberta remaining true to her Alberta heritage, enjoying a drive in the country in the fall to look at the crops. In B.C., she enjoyed a spring drive to watch the baby deer, elk, and geese.
Throughout her life one of Mom’s greatest passions was her flower beds. She had a particular knack for having lovely flowers which gave hours of pleasure to her and those who admired them, including the deer who came to prune them for her. Mother’s Day was special, a time to take Mom to all the various greenhouses to select her plants as spring was arriving, Mom was a caregiver. In Drumheller her Mother Helen, would come to live with her for her final years. Later, she would provide care and support in various ways to other members of her family. She never hesitated to help in any way she could, even if it were just a matter of listening to a troubled soul. Mom once stated that she used to worry about Brian, until he met Velma “Peaches” then she worried no further.
Those who knew her were touched by her generosity, one of her last words of encouragement was “Be nice to each other”.
Left to cherish her memory; her son Brian (Velma), grandson Jason (Rachelle), great granddaughter Kenzie, granddaughter Lynda (Ryan), special nephews Tim (Christine) and Rick (Karen), special niece Beverly, special friends Maryanne Pugh of Drumheller, Alta and Steven Dade of High River, Alta, In addition to many other nephew’s, niece’s, great nephew, nieces and friends.
Respecting Ann’s wishes there will be no service. Following cremation, in the spring Mom will return home to Bittern Lake (Camrose). Mourn her, but more so embrace having known and loved her.
Those wishing to remember Ann may do so; next spring planting a petunia or marigold in her honour. Ann would smile and be pleased. Arrangements entrusted to McPherson Funeral Services.

Departed this world on November 15, 2020 at the age of 81 years old. John was predeceased by his wife Irene, his son John Jr., his parents and 3 brothers.
John will be missed by so many. He loved being involved in the Rotary Club and the many initiatives they have undertaken over the 45 years he was a member. He was very involved in helping get the waterslide added to our pool. In fact, there were buttons calling it “Kohut’s Slide.”
John and Irene started Hi-way 9 Express in 1969. John was extremely proud of the company and his family. He was thrilled every time he saw one of the trucks and trailers even up to his final days. His heart and soul were in the company. He touched and influenced many lives while providing opportunities for those around him to have successful lives of their own.
John was known as the “Bear” for many reasons. He was a large man in stature, with a big giving heart to match. His strong vocal chords always let you know when he was around, and whispering was not in his vocabulary.
The Bear was a bigger than life Drumheller character whose story of success was epitomized by humble beginnings and a lot of hard work. His unwavering and selfless support to the community will be sorely missed.
John had 4 children, 12 grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren.
John and Irene were married for 60 years until Irene’s passing last year.
John leaves to mourn his daughter Heather (Kelly) Colberg, son Darrell (Kathy), son Dean (Katherine).
His grandchildren Trent, Taylor & Madison Colberg, Christopher Kohut, Karly Bensmiller, Kyle Kohut, Scott Kohut, Kristine Gillion, Jeffrey, Tyler & Mackenzie Kohut, Paige Roberge, and his 8 beautiful great grandchildren. He is going to be missed so much!
John was like an ever-ready battery. With too many health issues to count; we always thought he should become a medical project because he would beat one health issue, only to have to deal with another. John’s famous words were, “If I knew I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself.”
John spent many hours on his Goldwing Trike this past summer; it was his pride and joy. People would say, “Wow 81 years old and still riding”.
John finally lost his battle with heart and lung disease on November 15. He now rests in peace and is once again reunited with his wife Irene and son John Jr.
A celebration of life will take place at a future date.

PENTELESCU
George William

1939 - 2020

It is with great sadness, George William Pentelescu passed away peacefully on November 17, 2020 at 81 years of age.
George will be lovingly remembered by his daughter, Laureen Georgia Pentelescu (James R. Symonds); brother, Nick (Nicholas); sisters: Susan, Margaret and Doris as well as nieces & nephews. George has developed many close friendships over the years, old and new who will deeply miss him. He will also deeply be missed by his new extended family at Citadel Care Centre in St. Albert, Alberta.
George was born in Wayne, Alberta growing up on the family farm where he lived his younger years, then moved to Rosedale (Star Mine) where he settled down his roots with Irene Julia, nee: Sirko and daughter. In George’s earlier years, he was an avid hunter and trapper. George worked on many different jobs throughout his life. He worked in Drumheller area Coal Mines, on a Bridge Crew, Conmac Paving, Driver & Hauler for an Oil Company and a Tree Planter. In the early 90’s he bought property in Taylor Siding where he created a homestead planting an abundance of evergreen trees and working the land on the Rosebud River. After his land was established, he sold & purchased a rustic cabin property in Beaverdell, B.C. to live closer to his daughter. As George needed closer resources, he decided to sell and move to Westbank, B.C. where he enjoyed his new property; planting garden vegetables, flowers and picking raspberries. He was always helpful to his neighbors and enjoyed traditional cooking, sitting in the sun, making walking sticks and going for walks. When George had a stroke in his later years, he moved to Mountain View Care Home in Kelowna for a short time and then decided to move back to Alberta to be closer to his family and friends.
You will remember George as a great character and friend; for his high energy personality, which was infectious, his story telling with such vibrance & vigour, his giving heart, and always wearing his cowboy hat.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
Memorial donations may be made in George’s name for flowers & vegetables to be planted in his memory at Citadel Care Centre, St. Albert in the courtyard for residents and staff to enjoy. Phone (780) 458-3044.

PALLESEN
Rita Marie

May 26, 1935 - November 24, 2020

It is with both sadness and celebration that we announce the peaceful passing of Rita Marie Pallesen on Tuesday, November 24 at the age of 85 years.

Rita was born in Calgary to John and Agnes Hansen, and was raised on the farm at Beynon, Alberta. Being raised in a somewhat isolated location and as an only child for the most part, Rita’s pet cats and dogs meant she was never alone. Her earlier school years were spent in Beynon and at Blue Spring in Dalum, and some of her best memories were her high school years at the dormitory in Drumheller, where 34 girls shared a room together.

After high school, Rita worked as a secretary in Calgary. She married Olav Pallesen in 1956 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Dalum, and they enjoyed nearly 64 years together. While they lived on the farm at Beynon, Rita and Olav welcomed four children, and at that time, running water meant Mom was carrying two buckets across the yard. In the fall of 1964, the Pallesens moved to Dalum so the kids could more easily attend school. Mother’s Day in 1970 was a day none of us will ever forget, when the farmhouse burnt to the ground, presenting a whole new set of challenges.

Community meant everything to Mom. Her years of service in the Dalum Friendship Club and her dedication to Bethlehem Lutheran Church through music, record keeping and participating on multiple committees brought her great joy.

In her later years, Rita was a dedicated volunteer with Continuing Care in Drumheller. This included portering for hairdressing days, playing for sing-songs, organizing nightgown sewing bees, and lending a hand whenever called upon. Mom had not only a “can do” attitude, but a “will do” attitude that extended to all facets of her life.

We will forever be grateful for the caring and kindness shown to Mom during her time at Meadowlark in Strathmore, and to the entire staff on Unit 52 of the Peter Lougheed Centre who went above and beyond to ensure we had all the time we wanted to spend together.

Rita is survived by her husband Olav; children Daryl (Susan), Barry (Pauline), Connie (Michael) and Joan; grandchildren Jenny (Travis), Kirsten, Kurt, Kate (Derek) and Erik; and great-grandchildren Ali and Lane. She was predeceased by her parents John and Agnes Hansen; siblings Alice Rose and Eric; and her first born son.

Due to Covid-19, a private family interment was held at Dalum with Pastor Dan officiating. We hope to hold a celebration of Mom’s life at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made directly to Bethlehem Lutheran Church Memorial Fund or to a charity of your choice.
