If you ever worked for Ed, many would probably say he wasn’t the easiest to work for but you could ensure the job got done!

CHRISTENSEN (nee JENSEN)
Evelyn Cecilia

May 11, 1930 - August 9, 2020

Evelyn Cecilia Christensen (nee Jensen) passed away peacefully at the Drumheller Hospital on August 9, 2020, after a long and interesting life.
Evelyn, a true prairie girl, was born on May 11, 1930 in Standard, Alberta. She was the only child of Ragnhild and Tony Jensen. Even from a young age Evelyn loved to learn, and with her father’s tutorage she leapt directly into grade three at South Valley School. After attending high school in Cluny, with her best friend Muggs by her side she continued her education at the University of Alberta, graduating with a degree in psychology.
It took going all the way to Edmonton for her to meet a hometown boy, Harry Christensen – whose smart appearance and genuine smile she couldn’t resist.
Harry and Evelyn married in 1953. Before long they welcomed their first-born son, Barry, followed shortly by Bob and Leigh, completing the family. Evelyn and Harry had a successful farming career in the Standard area, eventually passing the farm on to their sons.
In 1983, as Harry put it, ‘they finally got a girl’, when Leigh married Yvonne Way, and in 1985 they welcomed their second daughter-in-law when Barry married Jutta Trapp.
Evelyn was an attentive and loving Bedstemoder to her four grandchildren. Her dry sense of humour, generosity, and love of politics - among other things, will be remembered by her family and friends.
Evelyn was always up-to-date on current and political events, even right up to her passing. Over the years, Evelyn travelled to many countries, and learning from her experiences abroad, she would relish in the stories of her grandchildren visiting the same countries years later. She was an avid reader of history and geography, which led her to being a valued volunteer at the Glenbow Museum. Her Danish heritage played a large part in her life, and to this day Evelyn is the reason her family loves all
things Danish. Some of Evelyn’s favourite things were dachshunds, croissants and macadamia nut chocolates - in that order.
Evelyn was a much-loved mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and friend. She will be fondly remembered by her sons and their families: Barry (Jutta), Bob, Leigh (Yvonne), her grandchildren: Fraser, Julie, Andrea and Shawna, and her lifelong friend: Lois Paulson. Thank you Lois for being such a true friend to Evelyn. Also remembering Evelyn are several cousins, brother-and-sister-in-laws, and nieces and nephews. Evelyn was pre-deceased by Harry in 2006.
Many thanks and big hugs to the staff at Homestead, Drumheller Continuing Care! Evelyn’s care at Homestead for the last nine years was exemplary - to her, Homestead was home. Your gentle teasing, kindness and loving care made Evelyn’s last years happy ones. Thank you to the staff at Drumheller Hospital Acute Care, you do your job so well! You made Evelyn’s transition so much easier for her and all of us.
For those who wish, memorial donations may be made to Drumheller Valley Bus Society, Box 2848, Drumheller, Alberta, T0J 0Y0.
A private family service will be held at a later date.

BARRIE
John Albert

February 9, 1933 - August 21, 2020

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our Father and Barrie Family Patriarch, John Albert Barrie.
Dad was born on February 9, 1933 in Lacombe, Alberta and was guided by his parents Jack and Virginia while growing up in Nacmine and Drumheller. Graduating from Drumheller High School and subsequently the University of Alberta, he ultimately was accredited as a Chartered Public Accountant with which he established his own accounting business in Three Hills.
Business was one thing, family was most important. Especially with arrival of children; Michael (Margie), Joanne (Nick) Contenti, Dennis (Sheri-Ann), Shannon (Don) Marciszyn.
In retirement, Dad became very well versed in the kitchen and loved to cook. His green thumb in the garden developed to exceptional. It also allowed more time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
While he had an unbelievable love for them, his heart and greatest love will always hold true for our Mother.
In a match truly created in heaven, Dad married Margaret Winnifred Hunter. They have been married almost 63 years during which Dad has absolutely adored and revered her every day. The truest gift our father has provided for us is to demonstrate what enduring love looks like.
On August 27th, we will host a service at the Three Hills cemetery at which we will celebrate Dads life and reunite him with his parents. This service will be performed by Wheatland Funeral Home.
As circumstances dictate we will only be able to include immediate family. However, we would cherish the thought that all family and friends who will not be able to attend will recall a fond memory, smile and toast Dad in the next short while. That would be an exceptional gift to our family.
A perfect day for Dad would be gardening, thoughts of family and friends, a good meal, a wee dram of cognac, and a hand held with Mom.

RANOSTAY
Joseph “Joe” Frank

September 2, 1938 - September 1, 2020

Uncle, cousin and friend, Joe passed away peacefully in Three Hills on the evening of September 1, 2020, one day shy of his 82nd birthday. His final days were filled with family who were able to share laughs and their love.
Joe was the youngest of a blended family of six, born to Joseph and Theresa Ranostay on the family farm in the Ghost Pine region of central Alberta on September 2, 1938. He grew up spending time with numerous cousins that were like siblings and was as much of a brother figure, as an uncle, to his older nieces and nephews.
He attended school at Sarcee Butte and Drumheller before returning to the mixed farming operation and to take care of Grandma and Granddad. In his youth he played fastball and slow pitch and throughout his life he enjoyed fishing in winter and summer, often spending time by the river with family. Joe always took the time to involve his nieces and nephews in the farm whenever they came to visit. Whether he was hanging a swing on a tree in the front yard, showing the spring calves and baby chicks, going for rides in the old farm truck to tour the fields or hiking in the coulees and by the creek, he always had time for family. In 2006 Joe moved off the farm into Three Hills where he enjoyed golfing, curling and bowling. Throughout the years he enjoyed gathering around the TV with family and friends to watch Bonanza, Ed Sullivan, Walt Disney, CFL football games and his Calgary Flames. His interest in farming never waned and he always asked about spring seeding, growing conditions, prices and harvest.
Joe will be remembered for his sense of humor, canned saskatoons and homemade sausages, card playing, his many dogs named Trixie and being the “chocolate Uncle” to his great nieces and nephews. A quiet, steady presence in our large Slavic family, he will be missed by us all. Joe was one of the good guys.
Joe is survived by his sister-in-law, Anne Labdik and brother-in-law Gerald Wobick, as well as his nieces and nephews and their families: Paul Labdik, John (Heather) Labdik, Anne (Al) Brunet, Mike Malaka, Cindy Malaka, Christine Malaka, Barb Ranostay, Steve Ranostay, Vicky (Brian) Brown, Barb (Terry) Belisle, Lorraine (Peter) Steenbergen and Mark (Sue) Wobick. He is also survived by many cousins and their families.
Besides his parents, Joe was predeceased by his siblings Steve Labdik, Josephine (Norm) Strong, Ludmila (Lewis) Malaka, Carl (Pat) Ranostay and Mary Wobick and a nephew, Daniel Ranostay.
In keeping with Joe’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. No flowers by request. If you wish to honour the memory of Joe, please make a donation in his name to a charity of your choice.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our wife, mother, grandma, friend, and teacher - Elzaida Cunningham on August 16th, 2020 at the age of 93.
Zaida was born in Drumheller, Alberta on December 29th, 1926. Her early years consisted of school, piano and dancing lessons as well as exploring the coulees around Turtleback Farm, the McGhee family home. Her curiosity, intelligence, and love of learning led her to the University of Alberta where she earned a Bachelor of Science and Education degrees. She instilled that love of knowledge in her many students in Yellowknife, Carbon, St. Albert and various other Alberta locations. Elzaida was one of the first female science teachers in Alberta. After retiring from teaching, she spent her time quilting, gardening and with family, although she never lost her love of learning or sharing knowledge. Her quilts, whether made of blue jean or finer fabrics, were coveted throughout the family and Canada. She took up astronomy and was one of the first to witness, through a telescope, the Shoemaker-Llevy comet that impacted Jupiter. She tutored many a student through their math and sciences. She was a generous, tolerant person as all were welcome in her home and at her table. She loved to dance and good music never failed to get her moving. She could be readily identified by her beautiful smile and a stylish signature hat. Elzaida was to the end, a woman of strength, grace and intelligence. She will be greatly missed.

LUND
Harold Christian

July 1, 1932 - September 11, 2020

Dad passed away in the early morning hours of Friday, September 11th on the farm where he lived his whole life and that he loved very dearly.
Harold’s family includes his wife Pauline, daughters Debbie (Harry), Lori (Lee), Della (Harvey) and son Lehn; his grandchildren Stephanie (Ryan), Candace (Greg), Peter (Sarah), Shayla (Drew), Kyle (Erin), Troy (Amy), Dayl (TeddiAnn) and Ava; and his great-grandchildren Kevin, Kurtis, Rozlyn, Scottie, Lincoln, Wyatt and Ryann. He is also survived by cousins in Denmark, whom he loved very much; Anker, Grethe, Jorgen, Peter and their families.
In 1958, Dad married the love of his life and his best friend Pauline, and they worked side-by-side for 62 years.
He was a very dedicated farmer and father and was incredibly successful at both; their beautiful farm is proof of their hard work. Both were very active in the Dalum community, including the 4-H Club, Hall Board and Church Council. Dad and Mom spent many hours playing crib but only in months that end with an “R”.
Dad had many hobbies and became a master of them all. Dinner bells, jewelry boxes, garden sheds, out houses, home renos; he was a jack of all trades! He restored an old family carriage that was falling apart on the farm. It took him many hours to complete. Family members were able to sneak the carriage off the farm without his knowledge, and as a surprise for his 80th birthday he was shocked to see his carriage entered in the Canada Day Parade!
Other projects that were important to Dad were the windmill and the barn that stand in the center of their yard today. He was committed to keeping everything on the farm in excellent condition and working order.
Dad always enjoyed watching sports of any kind; hockey, baseball and curling especially. He even tried waterskiing despite his fear of water and his inability to swim!
But his greatest joy was when his kids, grandkids and great-grandkids stopped by to share their latest adventures with Papa.
After spending a few weeks in the Calgary hospital, he was finally transferred to Drumheller. He was happy to be closer to the farm and the land he loved. The glow on his face was unparalleled when he was finally in the truck and headed home.
Dad will be fondly remembered by his family in Denmark who have anointed him the “King of Canada.” He travelled there as often as possible to visit his family and friends. There will be a celebration in honour of Dad on September 16th at the Vesterkro in Skodborg, Denmark.
Dad always enjoyed a cold Akavit with good friends and family. Though we can’t have a gathering to celebrate Dad’s life at this time, he would love it if the next time everyone had a skoal, they remembered him warmly.
In lieu of flowers or cards, donations can be made to the Dalum Community Hall Association, the Dalum Fire
Protection Association or the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Dalum.

A Life Taken Far Too Soon

On Monday, September 7, 2020, Robby Boyd, aged 29, passed away in Calgary, AB at the South Health Campus Hospital.
Robby will be lovingly remembered by his Mom, Pamela Shannon of Rosedale, AB; his two sisters, Abby/Curt Notland of Clive, AB, Sarah/Jason Blanke of Drumheller, AB; nieces Taylor, Brooklyn, Chloe and nephew Colby; his aunts, Laurie and Linda as well as many cousins and his two best buddies, Brandon and Tyler Scarlett.
Rob was predeceased by his father Bryan Boyd; grandparents and several aunts and uncles.
Robby was born in Drumheller, AB and for the most part lived all his life in Rosedale, AB. He went to school at St. Anthony’s and then DVSS (Drumheller Valley Secondary School). He loved the outdoors and all the seasons that came with it. Summers were full of BMXing, scooters, dirtbiking, camping, learning to wakeboard, floating down the Red Deer River, and winters were for skydiving, skiing, snowboarding, and always a favourite, playing hockey at the Rosedale rink with the gang. In his early years he loved basketball and the Raptors and had to have his room in all their colours until he discovered the Sixers and #3 Iverson.
For the last quite a few years, things changed and his passion switched to the NFL and the Eagles. He loved the Eagles, win or lose, he stood by that team.
Rob loved sitting out on the deck at night watching the deer and sometimes the moose, cross the yard. He loved looking at the stars and the Northern Lights dancing across the sky. He had great love for our cat “Baby”, who we had to put down last Labour Day, at the age of 18. He got us a kitten from a friend and became very attached to her and wanted her to have one litter of kittens. He called her little Mama, and she is, she had a litter of 5 kittens and Chunky Monkey was going to be his cat.
Robby shared a very special relationship with his Mom. They were mother and son and also best friends. He has suffered greatly the last couple of years with his health. If only we could have eased your pain. God gave you to us for too short a time but we’re so glad to have had the time we did.
Funeral services are uncertain at this time and may be announced at a later date. Anyone wanting to make a
charitable donation in Rob’s honour, may do so to the Drumheller Humane Society or Peggie’s Cat Rescue or a charity of your choice.

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our husband, dad, grandpa, father-in-law, brother, uncle,
and friend Daniel Clayton Havens in the early morning hours of Thursday, September 24, 2020, after a long struggle with ALS.
Born to Duncan Lee Havens and Maisie Irene Havens on August 20, 1950 in Chemainus B.C., Dan was the third of five children growing-up in Drumheller, Alberta. When he was 16 years old, he joined the Canadian Armed Forces with the Royal Electrical Mechanical Engineers. After four years he returned to Drumheller to complete grade 12 where he met the love of his life, Sherri in February 1971, and married February 5, 1972.
Dan had many jobs over the years, including working in many schools from Kimberley to Cranbrook where he made many friends. Although Dan worked hard at every job, he poured everything he had into his last retirement job at St. Mary’s School. St. Mary’s school held a special place in his heart for the fond memories and special friends that became family. While not working at a school, Dan could be found at the Legion, camping, shooting, or visiting with all his friends. One of his favourite places to be was at Rock Lake relaxing and reading a good book in his lawn chair.
Dan is survived by his wife of 48 years Sherri Havens, and children Jason (Cari), Michele (Brian), Duncan Lindsay), grandchildren Jordan, Taylor, Calem, Nash, Beckett, Cameron, and Brody. He is also survived by his siblings Leona, Sally (Tom), Ann (Shane) and Jamie (Kathy).
Dan was predeceased by his parents Duncan and Maisie, father-in-law Alfred, brother-in-law Fred, sister-in-law
Violet, and great-niece Chrissy.
Dan was always taking courses, taking on side projects, and reading books to better himself, now he is onto his next project and journey.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Mary’s school or Legion Branch No. 24 are greatly appreciated.
Arrangements entrusted to McPherson Funeral Services.

BAYES
Georgina Gladys

August 17, 1934 - September 29, 2020

Georgina Gladys Bayes was born on August 17, 1934 in Lac Vert, Saskatchewan. She was the eldest child of Eric and Eva Glasspell. She peacefully entered heaven on September 29, 2020 in Three Hills at the age of 86.
She grew up on the family farm helping her dad with the cattle and milking cows. Being the oldest she learned to saddle the horse or hitch it to the cutter to travel to school. She spent many summers at Bible camp where her relationship with Jesus her Lord was developed and strengthened.
Georgina attended school in Lac Vert but was in the hospital during portions of grade 10, 11 and 12 with Rheumatic Fever. In 1953 she moved to Three Hills and took grade 12 again at Prairie Bible High School.
After high school she worked in Trochu at the pharmacy for a year. Mom had several aunts in the area where she would spend Sunday afternoons, and there she met Jim Bayes. They were married July 2, 1955 and immediately moved to the farm 12 miles west of town, where she again took up her passion for farming. Georgina enjoyed working with beef cattle, milking cows and running equipment. With Jim away trucking most of the time she was the main driver on the farm. Dad died in a truck accident in May of 1973, and Mom made the decision to continue farming with us kids at her side.
Georgina loved many dogs over the years and even in her 80s got a new puppy. Throughout her life she enjoyed sewing clothes and handiwork, supporting her children in their endeavours, taking both her children and grandchildren to summer camp, attending graduations, weddings and other special functions, hosting family meals and serving others.
When Georgina married Clarence Colberg in May of 1987 her focus shifted from farming to grandchildren’s activities and travel. Her and Clarence enjoyed each others company for 10 years, till his passing in September 1997. She continued to travel, taking numerous cruises, bus trips, train excursions and visiting every continent except Antarctica.
Mom enjoyed her involvement in many organizations: 4-H, Christian Women’s Club, TOPS, Red Hatters, Crown Jewel, Senior visitation committee, and Palliative Care.
She was predeceased by her parents Eric & Eva Glasspell, husbands Jim Bayes and Clarence Colberg.
Georgina leaves to mourn her children; Marie Muddle, Harold (Glenda) Bayes, Karen (Garry) Weigum, and Oliver Bayes. 10 Grandchildren; Carmen Leuf, Kevin (Tess) Muddle, Adeleen (Matt) Bolduc, Bennett (Kendra) Bayes, Charlene Bayes, Drew Bayes, Sarah (Curtis) Hoffmann, Lyle (Laurel) Weigum, Courtney (Alex) Fried, Mack (Natasha) Bayes. 10 Great-Grandchildren; Logan, Lila, James, Merritt, Karis, Newton, Cohen, Blaire, Cecelia and Hunter.
