April 13, 1925 - February 16, 2019

Dad was born in Fillmore, Saskatchewan in 1925. He had 2 brothers and 5 sisters. Dad and Mom (Ida) were married for 69 years and had 4 daughters: Carol Drotos (Leslie), Darlaine Fuhlendorf (Arno), Linda Drotos (Joe) and Karen Smith (Paul). They had 9 grandchildren who Grandad loved immensely. They took them on holidays, fishing trips, and spent hours playing cards and just talking about their lives. My kids remember fondly an RV trip they took with them to Alaska. They also have many great-grandchildren who were the joy of his life. In their early days they had a dairy farm in Brooks and in 1973 moved to Carbon to grain farm. Then they retired to Drumheller and built and flipped 3 houses to keep busy and joined Pioneer Trail Centre where they had many friends. In 2011 they moved to Sunshine Lodge and after Mom died in 2014, Dad went to Hillview and then into Continuing Care. He was well looked after by all the staff and they made his final years pleasant. Thanks to all who did such a great job. There will be no funeral service.

Arnold passed away quietly at the age of 92, on February 6, 2019 at Breton, Alberta. Arnold was born in Calgary and raised on the family farm near Standard, Alberta. He loved his pets and enjoyed his long time in the Breton area. He is survived by Gail, his loving wife of almost 39 years and by the children from his first marriage: Val Rasmussen, Gerri Rasmussen (Ulrich Hofer), Janet Rasmussen (Frank Albus), Brenda Scott, Blaine Rasmussen and Bev Brown (Gerry), 11 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. NARGANG
Garry William

October 29, 1944 – February 25, 2019

Garry “The Old Grouch” passed away on February 25, 2019 at the age of 74. Garry was born in Regina, Saskatchewan and spent his youth in Regina and Moose Jaw. Despite shenanigans with his close pals in his formative years, Garry became an accomplished figure skater, competing at the national level in couples events. He attended the Saskatchewan Technical Institute’s Moose Jaw campus and received Red Seal certification as a chef - including baking, and meat cutting, which he used masterfully for over 50 years. It was due to this accreditation that he landed in Melfort, Saskatchewan where he met his life partner Fran. A career with the Canadian Penitentiary Service eventually brought him to Drumheller in 1970. His fondness for his new home was evident through his involvement with, and promotion of the community, through activities with the Active 20-30 Club, Rotary, the Chamber of Commerce and time of service as the President of the Big Country Tourist Association. Members of the community will remember him for a variety of business undertakings during his time in Drumheller. His children, Brenda (Sean) and Jay (Tamara) will remember him for his firm morality, soft heart, and most excellent special occasion cakes and party foods. His grandsons, Bayley and Max, will remember his resourcefulness with duct tape and the resulting creative outcomes, and for teaching them that if they are able to put a smile on someone’s face, the world is just a little bit better. Fran, his wife of just shy of 54 years, will forever remember his steadfast companionship and love. As per Garry’s wishes, no funeral service will be held. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made to STARS, a cause close to Garry’s heart.

January 24, 1949 - March 20, 2019

It is with great sadness that the Family of Everard (Barney) Vredegoor announces his passing on March 20, 2019 at the age of 70. Everard was born in Holland, and his given name was Everhardus Albertus Hendrikus Vredegoor. At the age of eight, along with his whole family of nine, they made the big move, and immigrated to Canada. They travelled by air to Montreal and from there they took the train to Lethbridge where an Uncle, Aunt and their children met them. The Vredegoor’s settled in Picture Butte, Alberta, where the whole family hoed sugar beets for a living. Even at the young age of 8, the workload was the same for all, hoeing the beets in the hot sun. In 1960 the family purchased a farm in the Hand Hills near Drumheller, Alberta and this is where they would build their forever home. He attended Elmer School in the Hand Hills and it was here that he became known as Barney. Barney continued his education at J.C. Charyk School in Hanna and Saint Peters College in Humboldt, Sask. Upon finishing School Barney took a job in Olds Alberta working at a Gas Plant, and from there he went to work in Grande Prairie for the Procter and Gamble Mill (Weyerhaueser). He lived with his sister Ann Amendt’s family and worked with brother in law Frank at the Mill. Barney eventually built a home of his own in Grande Prairie. He called Grande Prairie home until 1997 when he took a transfer to Weyerhaeuser in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. In 1999, Home was calling him and he took early retirement and moved to Drumheller. He kept busy with woodworking and handyman jobs. Moving from Drumheller to Cambria, and then back to an apartment in Drumheller. And his final move into Manor One. His time spent at the manor was an enjoyable time where he could joke with and bug the other residents. Barney enjoyed visiting, being active in the seniors center, sharing his many stories, as well as cooking many meals. Barney and his sisters Maria and Agnes and his late brother in law Ron Bigford, were always up for a game of Canasta and many a night and lots of days were filled with cards. You could find Barney out on his daily walks through downtown Drumheller or from Cambria to the Rosedale Grocery Store. Barney loved to read, liked electronics, computers, enjoyed fishing and loved his sports. He spent many hours helping out his Brother Tony, Brother In Law Frank, and his nephews Eddy, Billy and Tommy on their Ranches in the Hand Hills. He was very efficient at haying and fixing the machinery. He never missed very many brandings, and he took pride in putting that brand on just right. Barney will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his Brother in Law Frank (Lorraine) Amendt, Sister Maria Gammie, Brother Martin (Norma) Vredegoor, Brother in law Ray Gamracy, Sister Agnes (Dan) Martin, and Brother Tony (Marilyn) Vredegoor. Ralph Charles Whitmore Lucas’ journey began on July 31, 1937 in Regina, Saskatchewan. He was son to Caroline Molly Lucas and adoptive father Harry Lucas. His childhood was spent in Regina and some of those childhood friends became lifelong friends. All of Ralph’s careers centered around his love of electronics and technology. The firstborn children of Ralph and the late Joanne Cowan are Brent Lucas (Rachel) and grandchildren Olivia and Nicholas; Kendra Bednarczyk (Richard) and grandchildren Darynn and Ryan, all reside in Cranbrook, B.C. Ralph always treasured visits to B.C. to spend time with family and create memories sailing, camping, fishing and sharing stories. Ralph and Marie were married on December 22, 1973 in Calgary, Alberta. Together they had three daughters. Kim Suntjens (Kyle) of Drumheller, grandchildren Claire, Andrew, Cole and Jill; Cara Wynnyk (Levi) of Sylvan Lake, grandchildren Ruby, Solomon and Ari; Nichole Elliott (Brody) of Cochrane, grandchildren Sloane and Sawyer. Drumheller became home for Ralph and Marie in 1979. Many beloved family friendships developed over these years. In Ralph’s lifetime his loves and interests were numerous! He loved his family first and foremost. The arts, reading, and music were very valued by him. His passions were cars, camping, his many dogs, fly fishing, downhill skiing, martial arts, magic and anytime spent out in nature. Ralph and Marie retired to Sylvan Lake, Alberta in 2005. Ralph had a love of sailing and enjoyed Sylvan Lake’s beauty both on and off the lake. Palm Springs became a winter retreat for eight years and many lasting friendships and memories were created in their time there. Ralph’s health challenges were mounting. With heavy hearts we said goodbye on April 16, 2019 with his family by his side, at the age of 81. The family is blessed by the health care that Ralph received over the years in Drumheller, Sylvan Lake and Red Deer. Marie was his best friend, wife, advocate and devoted caregiver, and the family is eternally grateful. A memorial for Ralph Lucas is planned for Saturday, April 27, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. The service and reception will take place at the Badlands Community Facility in Drumheller, AB, 80 Veterans Way. Donations will be accepted for the Heart to Heart Society in Drumheller, Alberta.
