PEARSON
James (Jim) Alfred

November 23, 1961 - December 30, 2018

James (Jim) Alfred Pearson was born in Drumheller, Alberta November 23, 1961 and passed away suddenly in his home in Drumheller, December 30, 2018. Jim is survived by his loving partner, Donna Taggart (Trettin); mother, Mary Pearson; mother-in-law, Florence Taggart; sister Carmen (Darren) Davis; nephews, Rees and Mason Davis; niece, Sloane Davis; uncles Sam Waters and Jim Waters; aunts Anne Waters and Laura Waters and several cousins.
He was predeceased by his father, Roger Pearson, brother-in-law Douglas Taggart and sister-in-law Brittany Taggart. Jim graduated from Delia High School in 1979 and after a year of upgrading and working in Calgary, he enrolled and ultimately graduated in the Petroleum Technology program at SAIT with a specialisation in Geology. He worked for two different oil companies over the next few years and after finding the oil industry wasn’t for him, began taking night classes at SAIT in Graphic Artistry. He was quite gifted and was eventually contracted to create specifications of arms and ammunition for an American military magazine out of New York State. Jim was a Scientific Super Nerd. From an
early age, it was obvious he was wired differently than most. He obsessed over everything related to science and science fiction, comic books, cartoons, the band KISS, Star Trek and of course, grain elevators. He was a unique individual and his personality would fill any room. He had many friends across the continent that shared his passions. Many of Jim’s accomplishments came as a result of his graphic artist talents combined with his love of science fiction and history. He helped design a replica of the starship Enterprise that sits in Vulcan and once our iconic grain elevators began disappearing from the horizon, became an advocate for keeping that part of our prairie history alive. He created the company Vanishing Sentinels, and the term ‘Vatorologist’ to describe his role in preserving our farming and prairie history. Using his photography and writing skills, he wrote four books detailing the existence and location of all known elevators in Western Canada. Maps, calendars, and card stock model replicates of grain elevators also became part of his portfolio. He was asked to present his knowledge at conventions, in classrooms and different functions across the country and could also be found at different markets and trade shows selling his wares and answering questions. Family was extremely important to Jim and he rarely missed a family event. More than anything, he adored his nephews and niece and enjoyed spending time with them. They loved watching movies, discussing books/comic books and playing video games with him as they grew up. They were his official ‘Cookie Testers’ and he truly made amazing cookies! He was incredibly proud of their accomplishments as adults and made efforts to make sure they knew it. In 2014, after being friends for several years, Donna Taggart became central to his life and was a grounding, supportive force that he treasured and loved with all his heart. In 2012, Jim was diagnosed with leukemia and for the past six years courageously battled the disease. Recently, he was also diagnosed with heart disease which was what ultimately ended his life. A special thank you to the Drumheller Emergency Response teams (paramedic, fire and RCMP) who responded to the emergency call to Jim and Donna’s residence and for the herculean effort you made to save his life. A celebration of Jim’s life will take place Friday, January 11th, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. in the Cretaceous Conference Centre (Jurassic Inn) in Drumheller 1103 Highway 9, South. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. ZDUNICH
Dion

April 22, 1976 - January 3, 2019

Dion Zdunich passed away unexpectedly in Victoria, BC, on January 3rd, 2019. If anyone’s earned the right to RIP, it is him. Dion crammed more living into his 42 years than most people do in 142. Born April 22, 1976 in Calgary, he lived a purposeful, meaningful life, eschewing material trappings in favour of people, relationships and experiences. And he was doing it long before living mindfully, in the here and now, became so trendy. For Dion, there were no shades of grey. He had clear beliefs, stands and opinions on virtually everything. And was a lion in more ways than his shock of red hair and regal stature. When it came to fighting for the people, events, initiatives, and causes he
believed in, Dion was a force of nature. He gave his entire being to them—his fiery passion, his inimitable creativity, his time, and his money. In a world where thousands supposedly “have your back”—Dion Zdunich actually did, regardless of the personal cost. He is survived by his parents, Allan & Lucille Zdunich, June Evans & Tom Wilson, his sister, Jillian Zdunich, several aunts and uncles, and numerous cousins. And he is predeceased by his grandparents, Ernie & Velma Evans, John & Olga Zdunich. Also, his aunt Marlene Zdunich, uncles Ken Moore, John Nordlee, and Alex Wilson, and infant cousin Bobbi Jo Obrigavitch. Dion will be achingly missed by his family and friends, who, thanks to his nomadic lifestyle, stretch from the west coast to the best coast. And he will leave an equally large hole in the worlds of many thousands of Canadians in the marketing, music, theatre, and craft brewing communities, whose lives he touched, deeply, through his imaginative writing, quick sense of humour, tireless charitable work, and passionate pursuit of putting things right. There will be a Farewell to Dion Service on Sunday, January 27th, at 2pm at Kenaston Place in Kenaston, SK. We will then be remembering Dion the way he would have wanted—surrounded by family, friends, and refreshments, during a Last Call With Dion on Sunday, February 3rd, between 2 and 5 p.m., at the Royal Canadian Legion in Calgary; 116, 7th Avenue SE. All those who knew him are encouraged to join us for one, or both, these occasions. For those who can’t attend either, and are searching for a way to honour and remember him, the solution isn’t flowers or donations. Just carry on his spirit and legacy of selfless generosity. Take someone less fortunate for lunch or a coffee, pop some coins in a homeless person’s cup, reward a busker, or just listen attentively to the story of someone who is outside your day-to-day frame of reference.

Janiskiewicz (Janis)

July 1, 1925 - January 25, 2019

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear Mother, Grandmother and Great-grandmother, Helen Emily Graham, at Bob’s and Darcy’s home in Morrin, Alberta on January 25, 2019 at the age of 93 years. Helen Graham was born July 1, 1925 to Peter and Mary Janiskiewicz on a farm near Glenbain, Saskatchewan. She grew up there on the homestead with her parents and 12 siblings, surviving the Great Depression together. Summer evenings saw the family out playing baseball. Mom trained to be a nurse during World War ll when many nurses and doctors were away serving in World War ll. She graduated from nursing at the Regina Grey Nuns Hospital, then worked as a nurse in Regina, Saskatoon, Swift Current, Saskatchewan, Green Valley and San Francisco, California, and finally in North Battleford and Lethbridge, Alberta. She married Terrence (Terry) Compton Graham July 11, 1953 and they initially lived in North Battleford. They later moved to Lethbridge, Alberta. They bought a drugstore in Assiniboia, Saskatchewan in 1963 and called it Graham Pharmacy. They relocated and opened a clinic pharmacy at the Assiniboia Medical Clinic on June 1, 1987. They retired November 7, 1995 after 32 years of faithfully serving the people of Assiniboia and surrounding area. We lost Dad November 5, 1998 and Mom missed and loved him until the day she passed away. Mom remained in Assiniboia until September 2007 when she came to Drumheller, Alberta to live with Bob and Darcy. She then moved to the Morrin Blooming Prairies Seniors Fourplex for five years, close to Bob and his family. There she enjoyed supervising and participating in the landscaping, planting, painting, shovelling and weeding at Bob and Darcy’s new home. She also took pleasure in visits from her family and friends. She moved to the Sunshine Lodge in 2012, then to Hillview Lodge and eventually Continuing Care at the Drumheller Hospital. In her last couple of days, Mom came home to Bob and Darcy’s home where she stayed in her own bed from Assiniboia. We had the opportunity to be with her all the time, pray with her and Darcy sang to her some of her favourite hymns. Bob slept on the floor beside her on her last night, tended to her through the night and in the morning washed her and put a fresh set of clothes upon her. Bob went to make coffee and Darcy went to say, “good morning” but Jesus had come and brought her home to heaven. She leaves behind many dear and lifelong friends that she made in Lethbridge, Assiniboia, and Drumheller, along with her family: children Bob (Darcy) Graham, Donna (Gary) Befus, and Terry (Shelly) Graham, her grandchildren and great grandchildren, and her extended Janis and Graham families…all of whom loved and will miss her. There will be a Memorial Service at the Drumheller Alliance Church, on Saturday, February 2, 2019 at 1:00 P.M. there will also be a gathering in Assiniboia this spring where she will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in her memory to the charity of your choice. We would like to thank the healthcare professionals that have cared for our Mother and to all who have visited and supported her through the years. Finally, we want to thank Mom’s Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for His comforting words: “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live” (John 11:25 ESV)

HOURIE (WOODS)
Margaret Evelyn

August 21, 1930 - February 9, 2019

In loving memory of Margaret Evelyn Hourie (Woods) known by all as Evelyn. Evelyn passed away peacefully at the age of 88 at the Continuing Care in Drumheller on February 9, 2019 after a lengthy, courageous battle with Dementia. Born August 21, 1930 in Melfort, Saskatchewan to Robert and Lillian Woods she was one of 12 children. After finishing grade 11 she moved to Kamloops, B.C. where she worked as a nurse in the Tuberculosis Sanitarium. In 1952 she married Roy Hourie, they moved to Drumheller, Alberta where they bought a house in Nacmine and raised their 4 children. She leaves behind many dear and lifelong friends, along with her family: Charlotte, Barry (Linda), Debra (Maurice), Martha, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was known as Grandma to many who loved her and for her caring nature. Later on in life she was happily reunited with a son she had adopted out in 1952, Ed Jeeves... she was blessed with more grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents Lillian and Robert, husband Roy of 36 years in 1989, her eldest daughter Charlotte in 2003, her eldest son Ed in 2008, her brothers Johnny, Jimmy and Charlie and sisters Ruby, Mary and Edna. Her love of music is how she met her husband - she always said she couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket but that didn’t stop her from singing. She enjoyed helping people and animals, volunteering, babysitting, baking, knitting, crocheting, playing bingo and the list goes on and on. There wasn’t much she wasn’t good at doing, and she was quick to teach anyone who was willing to learn. There will be a memorial service for Evelyn on Friday, February 15, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. at the Salvation Army Church, 90 South Railway Avenue West, Drumheller. Following the service, there will be a graveside interment at the Drumheller Cemetery. Join us at the Nacmine Community Hall where we will then be remembering Evelyn the way she would have wanted—surrounded by family and friends, with snacks and refreshments. The family would like to extend a special thank you to all the healthcare professionals who have cared and taken such good care of Evelyn all these years both at the Sunshine Lodge and at the Continuing Care. Thank you as well to all who have visited and supported her throughout the years. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Salvation Army Church, P.O. Box 3097, Drumheller, AB T0J 0Y0 in Evelyn’s memory. Finally, we want to give thanks to the Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
And the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it. Ecclesiastes 12:7 ESV
