Betty

July 2, 1926 - May 8, 2019

Betty Read was born July 2, 1926 at the High River Hospital to Anthony and Catherine Read. In 1928 the family of four including brother Jack Derry, moved to Craigmyle and opened up the Read Hardware store. Betty attended the Craigmyle School for all her schooling. In March of 1944 she had to quit school and run the hardware store as both her parents were in hospital in Hanna and her brother was serving overseas. She had to take one more course, French, the next school term to get enough credits to graduate. While taking this course she worked for Mr. Innes at his grocery store in Craigmyle. Upon getting her credits it was off to Calgary to attend nursing school. She quickly made a lifelong friend, Elsie Hayes, and also discovered nursing wasn’t for her. She soon got a job at the Royal Bank in Calgary. With luck, she was transferred out to the Hanna branch and was back home again. Betty boarded in Hanna while working at the bank. In 1954 she was the first employee from the Hanna branch to be promoted to a supervisor’s position in the Calgary office. Betty was engaged to Ken Rew at this time and her heart kept her in Craigmyle. On July 12, 1954 they were married at All Saints Anglican Church in Hanna. Betty was a town girl and life on the farm would prove interesting but she took it all in her stride. John was born in 1957 and Linda was born in 1960. Her life was spent taking care of her family. She was a member of the Eastern Star for 63 years and was a dedicated member of All Saints Anglican Church. Betty was predeceased by her parents, Anthony and Catherine Read, her brother, Jack Derry and her husband, Ken Rew. She is survived by her two children, John (Joanne) and Linda (Lyle), numerous nephews and nieces and their families and many friends. Funeral Services for Betty will be held Wednesday, May 15, 2019 at 2:00 P.M. at the Craigmyle United Church, with lunch to follow in the church hall. If friends so desire memorial donations may be made to the Craigmyle Historic Society. Courtney-Winter’s Funeral Homes are in care of the arrangements.

ABRAMENKO
Peter

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Peter Abramenko of Rumsey, Alberta on May 6, 2019 at the Foothills Hospital at the age of 85 years. Peter was the 4th child of Flora and Peter Abramenko. Peter was involved in farming at a young age and worked for local farmers in the area for additional sources of income. He
also experienced working in a sawmill, a grain elevator construction worker, an oil rig hand and a bartender in
various hotels in the area. The sudden loss of his father in 1954 devastated the family. With few resources and fewer options, he, his mother and younger brother faced the challenges presented to them and continued to farm
uncertain of the future. In 1962 Peter married the love of his life Darlene Riggs. Sons Mark and Shawn were born in 1964 and 1967 respectively. Peter was happiest on the farm and the joy of spring calves and all the things spring brings. As spring moved into summer it also brought the Rumsey Parade, something that was a highlight to him and his family since they usually were participants. He enjoyed life and was fondly referred to by his sister Mary as Peter Rabbit and lovingly remembered by the rest of Mary’s family as Rabbit. He was the social butterfly of the family and loved to visit and reminisce of times past. Travelling was one of Peter’s passions. He loved the N.W.T. and Alaska, travelling there three times as well as Australia twice with his son Shawn via a motorcycle. He was amazed at what he saw on his trip to Churchill and all of its wonders. He was a deeply caring and giving person. He will be missed beyond measure. Peter will be lovingly remembered by his sons Mark and Shawn (Theresa); grandchildren Crystal, Leteisha, Kayden and Danica and numerous nieces and nephews. Peter was predeceased by his wife Darlene, brothers Nick & Bill, sister Mary and his parents Flora and Peter. RUSSELL
Wilfred George Craig

January 26, 1946 - May 18, 2019

Wilfred George Craig Russell (Craig) of Drumheller, Alberta passed away at home with his family at his side on Saturday, May 18 at the age of 73 years. Craig was born January 26, 1946 in Drumheller, Alberta; the second of three sons, to Norman and Margaret Russell. He was brought home to the family farm, north of Drumheller, where he proceeded to spend the majority of his life. His love for farming and classic cars started as a child: pouring over vehicle and farm machinery brochures. He spent his primary school years in Munson and graduated from Morrin School. From there he went on to Olds College where he received his Agricultural Diploma. Craig was adventurous and never afraid of a challenge; he went on from college to run a garage, manage a ski hill and race stock cars in between farming. During his early 20’s he backpacked for six months across New Zealand, Australia and Fiji. Upon his return to Canada he met and fell in love with his bride of the next 45 years: Janice Marie Berg. After their marriage on January 26, 1974 they commenced farming North of Drumheller. Five years later they welcomed their first daughter, Jill; with daughter, Laura and son, Calvin following close behind. Unstoppable: Craig raised his children, ran a growing farming operation, initiated a hot air balloon company, flew an ultralight plane and learned to sail. He welcomed with open arms and quickly befriended his children’s spouses: Derek, Larry and Kassandra. His grandchildren Daniel, Addison, Emilia, Anna, Elyse, Everly and Esmae were the light of his life. He embraced new roles as ‘Papa Pirate’ and enjoyed watching dance recitals. In Manitoba, he was a proud hockey, figure skating and swim team chauffeur and cheerleader. Welcoming Craig in Heaven are his nephew Christopher Russell, parents Norman and Margaret Russell; in laws Charlie and Mrytle Berg and brother-in-law Ray Berg. Left to mourn are his wife Janice; children Jill (Derek), Laura (Larry), Calvin (Kassandra), six granddaughters and a grandson. His brothers Arthur (Maureen) and Keith (Roxanne) and numerous nieces and nephews. Neigbours across the country in Drumheller, AB; White Sands (Stettler), AB; Westlock, AB; Radium, BC; and Pilot Mound, MB will miss their visits with Craig. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Badlands Community Facility, 80 Veterans Way, Drumheller, AB at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 23rd, 2019. To celebrate Craig’s love of classic cars the family invites all to bring their antique vehicles to park in the designated parking area by the cenotaph. Craig encouraged his wife’s passion for art and wished that donations in his name be made to the Canadian Badlands Artist Association, Box 836, Drumheller, AB T0J 0Y0. For Pilot Mound and area residents, donations can be made to the Pilot Mound Millennium Recreation Complex or Pilot Mound Swimming Pool (Municipality of Louise, Box 310, Crystal City, MB R0K 0N0). “FINISHED LIFE’S CHORES”

Neil passed away with family by his side on May 27, 2019, after a stoic battle with cancer. He was the second son born to Dawn and Marie Hampton in June, 1954. He grew up on and continued to operate the family farm west of Rowley. He can be described as a son, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, friend and neighbour. Though generally a quiet man, content to observe from the sidelines, he was knowledgeable and up to date on the happenings in the community. He was the family member we always turned to when we had questions on the family history. Neil leaves behind his brother, Stan (Wanda) Hampton; nieces, Karen, Morgan and Macy Block, Tara (Rob), Jayden and Cameron Vanden Pol; and many aunts, uncles and cousins from both the Hampton and Griffith families. SYMOWONIUK
Michael Sant

It is with shock, heartbreak and great sadness that the family of Michael Sant Symowoniuk announce his passing on Friday morning May 31, 2019 while working away in Mayerthorpe, AB at age 56 years.
Mike grew up in Rosedale and was the eldest son of Walter and Patricia Symowoniuk and brother to John and Taras Symowoniuk.
Right out of High School Mike started working with Alberta Transportation as a surveyor and started his 38 year career in Road Construction. He was respected and sought after within the industry as a Senior Soils Technician and WSP Engineering (EXH & Genivar) from Red Deer were lucky to have his dedication, loyalty and expertise for 20 years ... his nickname was “The Cleaner”. He respected his Road Family and we know there will be a void for all with his loss. Many of the crew enjoyed his BBQ’s and cooking on the road …. he loved cooking and his kitchenettes. During his winter months he had the opportunity to work alongside his cousin Rocky in Alberta and BC, with the crew from Rock Solid Construction. The bond with Rocky and Vanda will never be broken.
Mike convinced that “East Coulee Girl”, Tracy Samel, to date him and on August 3, 1985 they were married. They created an amazing life together and Tracy was the love of his life. Many good times, and of course rough patches along the way, but they always seemed to pull through. They did not have any children of their own but guided and watched many nieces, nephews and their friends kids grow up over the years….this Uncle and Auntie were loved by many, he would always say when visiting the kidlets…can’t we keep them or take them home with us?
Mike had many loves in life. He was an amazing cook, could sing, collected coins, he bowled in a league, played broomball, hockey at the rink and ball with the Wayne Regulators, he enjoyed shooting billiards and occasionally golfed. In the winter his passion was sledding with the Rosedale Gang - Mizer, Snappy, Shakey Joe, Rosco, Porkie, Dobbie and their boys. He was a Rangers fan and got to take in a game in February. A highlight for Mike was when he and cousin Rocky flew to Tampa Bay, Fl to take in Superbowl XXV. Their 49’ers never made it to the “Big Show” that year but the experience was amazing! A love for travel took Mike and Tracy to many destinations over the years, Mexico, New Orleans, Tampa Florida, Vegas, Hawaii and Montana. Of course having beers with friends was pretty high up there … lol.
He was very proud of his vehicles over the years ... he loved fast cars ... a Firebird, a Red Camaro Z28 and finally his baby in the garage...a navy 1981 Camaro Z28.
The Samel and Symowoniuk family built a bar in Rosedale called Gedo’s (Outlaws Saloon). The crew was all Rosedale boys....Mike learned so much from Boyd, Tonto, Reb and Randy. We know for certain he is enjoying a Rainier with a few of these boys in Heaven today! The many great times in the old bar and the new place will last a lifetime. Mike had an amazing sense of humour and always had a nickname for friends, family and co-workers. He was great at music trivia. He could impersonate friends, family and even hollywood stars.
Most who knew Mike well know he was very opinionated. At times relationships were tested as a Love-Hate, but those who knew him best, knew he had a heart of gold and would be there for you at any given time.
Mike leaves to mourn his wife Tracy of 34 years (yes they were married at age 12... lol). His mommy Patricia, brothers John (Tracey & Kyle) and Taras (Brandon, Janet, Cassie & Cody), father-in-law Willie Samel Sr. and brothers-in-law Willie and Mike and families, Auntie Shirley Los and her boys, our Los Boys - Rocky and Vanda, Rod and Jacqueline, Rick and Nellie-Ann, Jason and families, extended family Cindy and Terry Zambo, the Gallagher family - Eileen, Terri and Dave, Marcie and Larry and families. He was much loved by aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, co-workers and lifelong friends.
He was predeceased by his Grandmas, Grandpas Mike and Mike, Uncle John, father Walter Symowoniuk, mother-in-law Georgie Samel, brother-in-law Scott Samel, sister-in-law Teri Ludwig, Uncle Louie (Bob Gallagher), and many dear friends over the years.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Drumheller Stampede Barn on Saturday, June 15 at 2:00 p.m.

RIPPER
Cordell Lane

November 14, 1976 - June 17, 2019

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Cordell Lane Ripper on Monday, June 17, 2019. Left to cherish his memory are his parents; Dan and Norma Ripper of Drumheller, his sister Kimberly and her children; Schae-Lynn, McKenna, Jace and Rhett of Warman, Sask. Cordell was diagnosed early in life with some severe handicaps. Cordell never asked for anything in this life but always gave you that smile and his laugh no matter how he was feeling. Cory will be sadly missed but never forgotten. The family would like to extend a sincere thanks for all of the staff at the D.A.R.T.’S. residence. Special thanks go out to Edna and Teresa who were truly his guardian angels. Thanks also to all the medical staff and Dr. Olfert for making his last years comfortable. Your kindness and concern will be forever remembered.

Elbert was born on March 11, 1938 on the family farm in Uddel, Netherlands and after completing 2 years of Agricultural College in Putten, he immigrated to Canada at age 17 with his family. He spent his life doing what he loved, farming in the Carbon area until his retirement. Throughout his life he enjoyed many hobbies, including hunting with his boys, woodworking, photography, reading, building his own boat and tractor, but especially enjoyed coffee and a visit with friends and family. Dad will be remembered for his kind and gentle spirit no matter the circumstances, and how his faith and his family were of the utmost importance to him.
