HEIN
Gerald Curtis

August 17, 1948 - May 27, 2021

It is with tremendous sorrow that the family of Gerald Curtis Hein announces his passing on May 27, 2021 at age 72 years. After a courageous 15 year battle with Parkinson’s Disease Gerald passed away at Bethany Riverview in Calgary from Parkinson’s complications.
Gerald is survived by his partner of 26 years Ron of Calgary, son Kelly (Marsha) Hein of Strathmore, daughter Sonya Elias of Calgary, grandchildren Mateo Elias, Landon and Hayley Hein, brother Larry (Deb) Hein of Victoria B.C, sisters Arlene (Robert) Filkohazy of Hussar, Fay (Doug) Bangle of Strathmore, Debbie (Glenn) Laycock of Rosebud, Valerie (Maurice) Thevenaz of Drumheller and numerous nieces and nephews. Gerald is predeceased by his parents George and Ella Hein.
Gerald was born prematurely on August 17, 1948, in Bassano, Alberta at a mere two and a half pounds. He was nurtured to health by his grandmother Katie Rutschke, then joined his parents on the family farm east of Hussar, Alberta near the community of Duck Lake. Gerald
graduated from Olds College in 1968 with a diploma in General Agriculture and returned to the family grain and cattle farm to raise purebred Charolais with G & E Hein Farms. Dedicated to hard work on the farm, Gerald was also active with the Hussar 4-H Beef Club as a member and leader. He lived and worked in the Hussar area until 1991 when he relocated to Calgary in the community of Millrise. He worked for Alberta Hail and Crop Insurance, WCB, and the City of Calgary up until the time his health forced him into early retirement.
Gerald was well known for the immaculate care he took of his home and yard, he loved to joke and tease; his personality was infectious. This trait followed him into his care homes, Mackenzie Towne Retirement and Bethany Riverview, where he became a favourite of staff and residents alike. He knew his illness would rob him of his ability to play on the floor or take his grandkids to the park so he played with them every moment he was able to. It’s the only time his house was a mess and he had a huge smile on his face.
His courage to come out 32 years ago allowed people who loved him to fully know him and paved the way for others to live authentically. His passing will forever leave a void in our hearts.
In Lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to The Parkinson’s Association Of Alberta (120, 6835 Railway ST. SE Calgary, Alberta T2H 2V6 or online at ParkinsonsAssociation.ca).
Due to COVID-19 Restrictions a small family graveside service was held at Mountain View Funeral Home and Cemetery on June 4, 2021 at 2:30 pm.

McCULLY
Douglas (Doug) Maxwell

May 19, 1943 - May 23, 2021

Douglas Maxwell McCully was born May 19, 1943 and passed away peacefully May 23, 2021 at the age of 78. He was the eldest of two sons born to Jack and Lil McCully.
He and his younger brother Allan were raised on the family farm near Delia, Alberta where they learned the value of hard work, how to fix and restore equipment, and engaged in many shenanigans which would later yield stories told of good times gone by. After graduating from high school, Doug commenced work with a bank prior to pursuing post-secondary studies in Political Science at the U of C where he more than helped pay his way through university by shooting pool – often having to rush out a back door. After graduating university Doug went back into banking and while working at the bank, crossed paths with a young nursing student, Anita Atkinson, from Nanton, which signaled the end of his search for love.
Doug and Anita were married in 1965 and started their family when first son Blake was born in 1968. Sean followed in 1972. Doug was a champion of the underdog. He was loving, loyal, kind, self-effacing and possessed an insatiable thirst for knowledge; he was also as cheap as they come - except when it came to cars, rationalizing to his new bride the need to purchase a new ’68 Oldsmobile 442 rather than a new washing machine to launder baby diapers. This decision was appreciated years later by the boys when they were gifted the 442, rather than a washing machine.
Doug worked his way up to branch senior management in the bank before leaving to pursue small business, many of which centered around his interest and passion for cars. A serial entrepreneur, Doug was highly competitive and thrived on the challenge and stress of creating new niche business ventures. In association with different partners, he started and operated a range of successful businesses in 4WD repair, high-performance engines, vending machines and light industrial powder coating. He was also leader and mentor in starting and managing his businesses, in coaching and managing the boys’ sports teams, and in the family. Doug involved his boys in various roles within the companies, teaching them life lessons in business, the ethic of hard work, being a jack-of-all-trades – and the value of mastering the art of delegation.
Although Doug was driven to provide for his family, he also took pleasure in the simple things - a game of pool, coaching the various sports in which his boys engaged, traveling in his motor home while towing his beloved Jeepster Commando behind, camping, canoeing, an annual “can’t miss it” hunting trip, watching a good western, reading a history book or just relaxing on the veranda of the family farm watching the sunset, a place which forever held a piece of his heart. Doug valued friendship and as such, maintained numerous lifelong relationships with friends dating back to his childhood. He believed that old friends were the best kind, unless he found a new one worth turning into an old one.
Doug loved dogs and had many faithful companions over his lifetime. He was also a serious vehicle collector and restorer, but then could never quite bring himself to part with his collection. His passion for vehicles was not limited to collecting, as he also indulged in dirt drag racing and hill climbing.
Doug was incredibly proud of his boys and grandchildren and upon retirement, could be found most weekends standing at the edge of the rink, the side of a ball diamond, basketball or volleyball court or soccer field, no matter how far the venue or how inclement the weather. Even as his health declined, his commitment of support didn’t waiver, taking in the games from his vehicle – and on more than one occasion to the detriment of his windshield. He had a life well lived and we shall miss his presence in our lives.
Doug is survived and will be missed by his wife and love of his life, Anita, sons Blake and Sean (Christine); and grandchildren, Jenna, Caden, and Cooper; as well as brother Allan (Lee); nephew John; and nieces, Joan and Julia and their families as well as his many friends.
At Doug’s request and in consideration of COVID restrictions, there will be no funeral service at this time. Condolences, memories and photos may be shared and viewed on Doug’s obituary at www.McInnisandHolloway.com.
If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the many health practitioners who provided gentle and compassionate care to Doug over the years.
In living memory of Doug McCully, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area.

Forever in Our Hearts

Joe Rosso passed away peacefully, with his wife at his side, in Calgary on June 03, 2021, at the age of 83.
Joe was born in Drumheller on September 17, 1937, the second youngest of the seven children of Mary and John Rosso.
He grew up in Drumheller and excelled in playing hockey and baseball. Joe apprenticed to become a qualified welder and worked throughout Alberta for Alberta Gas Trunk Line Company. Joe relocated to Edson, the year before Joe and Lois were married when Joe was promoted to District Welder for the company. In 1974, the family moved to Calgary and a year later he ventured out on his own. Joe applied his trade across the country, working in almost every province and territory. Joe was known for his meticulous attention to detail and for never striving for anything less than the perfect weld. Those who had the pleasure of working with Joe would quickly learn his passion for getting the job done right, keeping the worksite in order and for ensuring no shortage of practical jokes across the miles.
Joe had a gift for making and fixing anything and whenever there was a problem or renovation required he was always the “go-to guy” for family and neighbours. In retirement, Joe and Lois explored all parts of Canada and the US and enjoyed numerous foreign destinations. Joe was always quick to share a joke, lend a hand, and to make sure you had a drink in your hand while enjoying some time by the fire (started with a blow torch) as the days wound to a close.
Joe’s family was important to him and he was much loved by Lois, his wife of 57 years, and their daughters, Jayne (Greg) and Stephanie (John) and grandsons Declan and Luke Jackson.
He is survived by his sister Ellen (Surprise, AZ), brother Ivan (Vernon, BC), sister Irene (Calgary), members of Lois’s family and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother Steve and sisters Sara and Kathy.
The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation for all the care and kindness that was shown to Joe at Cambridge Manor.
Condolences and memories may be shared and viewed on Joe’s obituary at www.arbormemorial.ca/edenbrook/obituaries.

LARSEN
Niels

April 6, 1937 - June 21, 2021

It is with heavy hearts, we announce that Niels passed away peacefully on Monday, June 21, 2021 in Strathmore, Alberta. Niels Christian Larsen was born on April 6, 1937 in Bassano, Alberta. He is predeceased by his parents Kay and Kirstine Larsen and siblings Ejla, Bitten, Kai, Bella and Ellen. He is survived by brothers Bob and Bill Larsen.
He leaves his forever love, Barb and 2 children, Brenda (Ralph) Rickes and Rob (Kim) Larsen; 4 Grandchildren, Trish (Mark) Alexander, Stephanie (Joe) Schultz, Kai Larsen and Kirstina Rickes; and 1 Great Grandchild, Jackson Schultz.
Niels left home at the age of 16 to work but his heart soon brought him back to marry the love of his life, Barb Armstrong on July 18, 1959. Niels and Barb worked for Eric Selgensen for 2 years, during which time their daughter, Brenda was born. They then moved to Wintering Hills to farm Barb’s Grandfather’s land. In February 1966, their son Rob was born and, one month later, they moved to Niels’s Dad’s homestead to farm the land which became their home for 33 years. Niels was a hard worker, never one to sit idle, there was always work to be done. He got Rob on the tractor early and shared his wisdom and love of farming as they worked side by side throughout the years. In 1999, Niels and Barb moved to Hussar. Niels seldom missed a day driving to the farm to work and tinker on machinery. All this tinkering resulted in his collection of 18 old tractors being brought back to life, as well as many others “in the works”. Niels was also proud of his 1952 Chev truck which he restored. He loved to bring his tractors and truck to the parade in Hussar and have the Grandchildren ride along.
The coffee was always on at the Larsen’s and they loved to have company stop by. Niels especially enjoyed when his brothers and sisters visited for a lively time of cards, heated discussions and roars of laughter.
Niels was very proud of his family and cherished the time spent with them. Niels and Barb enjoyed 61 years of marriage together and made many memories including a family trip to Denmark in 1979 and numerous vacations and camping with friends and family.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 3, 2021 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Hussar at 2:00 p.m. with lunch to follow at the Hussar Community Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made directly to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church or the Hussar Cemetery Fund, both in Hussar, Alberta.

February 29, 1924 - May 21, 2021

With profound sadness in our hearts, we announce the passing of John Wiebe on May 21, 2021 at the Drumheller Hospital with his family by his side at the age of 97.
John was born in Neuhorst, Saskatchewan, February 29, 1924 to Peter N. and Aganetta Wiebe, the oldest of nine children.
John had reached 57 years membership in the Royal Canadian Legion having served in the Army Service Corps in the Second World War.
He had an extraordinary life because he strived on being the best at everything he believed in. He ran a taxi company in Drumheller from 1950 - 1963, working as parts manager at the Ford dealership, he got to travel around the world while being #1 salesman for Lifetime Cookware, and then working at the penitentiary before retiring. He realized retirement wasn’t for him so he got his real estate license in 1997 where he became Drumheller’s oldest real estate agent. He did finally retire at the age of 91 and a half. If there is one thing John taught us, it’s that you are never too old to learn something new.
Dad treasured time with family. He enjoyed spending time at the Legion, trap shooting, curling, golfing, darts, and loved a great game of pool!
John was an amazing man, loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was a strong and independent man, while being a kind and caring friend. His impact on those lucky enough to know him will continue to be felt. We could not be luckier to have had such a great man in our lives.
John will be deeply missed and forever remembered by his daughter Christine (Wayne), his granddaughters Melanie (Steve) Hansen, Sandy (Shawn) Dudley, and his great-grandchildren Tanner and Olivia Hansen, and Jaxen, Carter and Kenadie Dudley, his brothers Ben (Eva), Martin (Joyce), sisters Mary Neufeldt and Hilda Reimer, sister-in-law Eva Wiebe.
A private service was held with family.

FANDRY
Craig Curtis

August 1, 1960 - July 2, 2021

Craig Curtis Fandry, son of Darlene Fandry and late Leroy Fandry, was born on August 1, 1960 in Calgary, Alberta and raised in Hussar, Alberta. Craig was immediately adored at his arrival in this world, by both sets of grandparents, as he was their first grandson. Craig’s lighthearted and fun nature shone through, as he cared for and mentored his younger cousins and siblings. Craig was the oldest of five children, followed by Steven (Janice), Shane (Carla), Russell (Kristin), and Monica (Scott); along with 10 subsequent nieces and nephews, of which he adored.
Craig attended Hussar School from grades one to twelve and was active in the community, participating as a member of the Lions Club, enjoying sporting events,
other functions, and playing on local sports teams. Being naturally athletic, and a hard-working farmer, gave Craig an advantage at volleyball, baseball, and of course, hockey. Craig built many friendships through his years in Hussar and was always well-liked. He was also known for his compassion for children, with lots of stories shared of how he engaged playfully and with animation. He was always pushing someone on a swing, playing Cinderella, carrying kids on his shoulders, and teaching them how to fix up old vehicles, to name a few highlights. He was truly a giant teddy bear.
After he graduated high school, he attended SAIT and in 1981 achieved his Welding Engineering Technology Diploma. He enjoyed welding and became skilled at it, working on the pipelines with Rick Shannon’s crew and at Barber Industries.

In 1984, he married his high school sweetheart and the two of them started a home and farm near Hussar. In 1986, Erin was born, his only child. Erin is married to Garry, and together they raise Craig’s grandchildren, Spencer, Olivia, and Maddison.
Unfortunately, it was in the next few years, that Craig was diagnosed with Schizophrenia and the pervasive toll of this disease and subsequent physical deterioration changed his life path, until his passing at the young age of 60.
It was in 1992 that he moved to Claresholm and lived independently. He received the care and support from the Care Center and their staff, that helped him navigate his next 30 years. It was here, where we all learned his true personality and intense strength of character; qualities we could all learn from. He tried desperately to work as much as his health would allow, making cabinets in Nanton, then at Landmark Feed Mill and finally, at the Agriplex.
During his 30 years in Claresholm he became a Jehovah‘s Witness and was unwaveringly committed to his Faith. This community cared for and circled him when he was feeling low and lonely. They taught Craig about Jehovah, and this became his life’s work. Craig believed and loved Jehovah; he was not afraid to die and be freed from the confines of a disease and body that did not allow his true personality to show itself any further. As his friend Paul said, Craig loved Jehovah with all his heart and Jehovah will take care of him.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Kingdom Hall in Claresholm, through JW.org; or mailed to 4807 2a St. E., Claresholm, Ab, T0L 0T0 or to the Claresholm Centre to Mental Health: mailed to 139 43rd Ave, Claresholm, Alberta, T0L 0T0.

KALBHEN
Linda Mary

July 9, 2021

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our strong wife, mother, sister, grandma, great-grandma, and friend to so many. Linda passed away at the age of 76 on July 9, 2021. Linda passed peacefully at Sagewood in Strathmore surrounded by her family.
Linda grew up in Cluny where she later met the love of her life, Bill Kalbhen. Bill and Linda married in Rockyford at St. Rita’s church, and shortly after started building
their life. Together they built the Kalbhen farm (Sturgeon River Ranch) just outside of Rockyford. They blessed each other with 5 children and celebrated 54 years of marriage together.
Some of Linda’s interests included, going on cruises and holidays, baking, shopping and visiting neighbours. Most importantly though, she loved spending time with
family. Linda never missed a family event and was known to never complain. Linda was one of the strongest persons we knew and would always be the first one to volunteer for events.
Linda is predeceased by her daughter Tanya. She is survived by her husband Bill, children Margo (Mike) Comstock, Warren (Tyla) Kalbhen, Stacey (Shawn)
Wilson and Erica Kalbhen. Grandchildren Amy, Brooke, Taneil, Toni, Billi, Jayse, Kadin, Matt, Joel, Mitchell, Meleah and Great-Grandchild Nash.
