BERGOS
Dorothy Elsie

July 27, 1933 - February 22, 2021

Dorothy Elsie Bergos, beloved wife of Alexander Bergos passed away peacefully in Drumheller, on February 22, 2021 at the age of 87 years. Mom was born on July 27, 1933 in Delia, Alberta. She was the only child of Francis and Elsie (Diegel) Porter. The family lived in Delia until the beginning of the war, at which time they moved to Ontario so Francis could serve in the army. Later they moved to Calgary, where Mom fell in love with city life and all it had to offer, especially going to the movies. No matter where she was going, a movie was on her agenda. Packing a lunch and hitting two or three movies a day was not uncommon. This love of movies helped many of us on winning many Trivial Pursuit games. In 1948, Mom, Grandpa and Grandma moved back to Drumheller where Grandpa started Porter Signs. After Mom finished school she began a career as a secretary with Century Coals Ltd. and later on Commander Mines.
After a few years, Mom began working for Hudson’s Bay Oil and Gas out of Drumheller. Mom moved back to Calgary to work for Husky Oil and Gas. It was during this time, while visiting back and forth in Drumheller she met Dad, who farmed in the Orkney district. Mom and Dad married on October 26, 1957 and remained on the family farm until 1985. Mom enjoyed all the social activities in Orkney, which included evening skidoo trips through the district, game nights with the neighbours and gatherings at the Orkney Hall. These are all memories she treasured. Mom and Dad built a lovely home on the Red Deer River with great neighbours on either side, with the most beautiful view of the river and the valley right out their back door.
They would have celebrated 64 years of marriage this coming October. When asked, Mom would say her greatest joy were her children. Mom and Dad had a daughter, Sharon and a son, Grant. Grant married Tweet Bertamini and they have two daughters, Maria and Kia-Alexis. Mom and Dad were thrilled to have their first Great Grandson, Theo, who they adored.
While raising her children, Mom worked as a teaching assistant at the Orkney School until it closed around 1975. She loved this job and loved all the Orkney kids. Later Mom started to work at the Drumheller FCSS. Eventually, Mom and Sharon operated Valley Office Assistance in Drumheller until such time as she accepted the Managerial position at the Drumheller Chamber of Commerce, a position that she held for 15 years. Mom’s work with the Chamber included fostering a healthy commerce, July 1st activities and the creation of the Royal Tyrrell Museum Giftshop. Mom’s work with the Chamber of Commerce created a further interest in the wellbeing of the valley. Following in her Father’s footsteps, Mom entered into politics and served two terms on City Council.
Mom enjoyed the many committees she worked on especially the Movie Committee. As per Mom’s love of movies this committee was a dream come true. Working with the movie industry Mom used her knowledge of the area to find them the perfect place to film. Mom was thrilled with the opportunity to work with the Movie Industry and getting to meet Directors, Actors, and Actresses. It was well known when it was Academy Awards night, everything stopped in the house. Supper was early and there were no phone calls made as Mom was glued to the television watching from the red carpet to the last award.
Mom also sat on the Fire and Police Board and Sunshine Lodge Board developing a whole new group of work colleagues and friends. Included in her volunteerism was a 20 year role with the Drumheller Stampede and Ag Society. Mom was a member and Chairperson of the Drumheller Institution Citizen Advisory Committee for 25 years. As a young girl, Mom joined the Knox United Church and was always more than happy to sit on various church committees. Even in retirement, she was unable to sit still and worked for her friend Patrice Wolfe at the Antique Store and then the Heartwood Manor and Spa. Mom was a lifetime member of Beta Sigma Phi. She cherished the friendship of her Sorority Sisters and thoroughly enjoyed all the volunteer activities they took on. Mom took a freelance job at the Drumheller Mail, writing all the family history stories of long-time residents of Drumheller and surrounding areas. She particularly loved this job reacquainting herself with many of the oldtimers in the valley.
Mom had the greatest love for travel. She had a large map of the world stapled to a wall in her home. The map was covered with pins that represented all of the places she had been. One of the highlights was her trip to New York City. This was a life-long dream of hers to be able to attend the live theater and take in all the many sights. When Mom developed Parkinsons she was fortunate to continue travelling with her friend Patrice Wolfe, to cross off a few more bucket list trips.
During Mom’s time spent at Continuing Care, her management skills and political savy fostered changes up and including the daily supper menu. Mom enjoyed the recreational activities and always contributed to ideas of improvement. Mom even accused the Recreational Gals of making the Trivial Pursuit Game too easy. Mom had her own phone, television, Ipad with internet, and even Netflix. This enabled her to keep in touch with all her friends, up to date with all the news and the thousands of movies on Netflix.
Mom lived a very eventful, busy and accomplished life. She made such an impact on the Town of Drumheller. Mom was a strong independent woman, paving the way for other women. There was not a function or an event that she missed, and her love for life never wavered. We are sure when Mom showed up at Heaven’s Gate, she was asking what time Happy Hour would start and who was bringing the Appys.
Mom was pre-deceased by her parents Francis and Elsie Porter and in 2005, mourned the loss of her Grandson
Corbett Schaffer.
Mom leaves behind her Husband Alex, Daughter Sharon, Son Grant, Daughter-in-Law Tweet, Grandchildren Maria and Grant, Kia and Trevor and Great Grandson Theo.
Our family would like to extend their gratitude to all the staff at the Drumheller Long Term Care and Acute Care for providing excellent care to Mom, as well as the Recreation Department for entertaining her over the years. Thank you, to Dr. Chetty, Dr. Mateer, Dr. Graham and Dr. Liknes for their compassion and attention they provided Mom. We would also like to extend our gratitude to all Mom’s friends who continued to find the time to visit her, hold coffee parties or call her at Long Term Care. Although the Parkinsons limited Mom’s ability to get out and see her friends, her friends made time to come and visit her.
Due to Covid, no service will be held at this time. Our family would like to encourage Mom’s friends to remember by doing some of the things she loved – take in a Movie or have a little bubbly in her memory.
If friends so desire memorial tributes can be made to the Drumheller Health Foundation specifically towards the Recreation Department, 351 – 9th Street N.W. Drumheller, Alberta T0J 0Y1 or to the charity of their choice.

SIEMENS
Douglas Robert

September 4, 1945 - February 24, 2021

Douglas Siemens of Morrin, Alberta, beloved husband of Janis Siemens (Moe), passed away peacefully after an unexpected illness on February 24, 2021 at the age of 75 years.
Doug was a loving husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle & nephew. All who knew him can attest that he was a kind, strong man of faith who led a life of integrity. In all aspects of his life, whether as a husband, father, friend or a businessman, Doug would lead by example. He exemplified honesty & stood by his word.
Doug was born on September 4, 1945 in Drumheller, Alberta to John and Beth Siemens. He spent his early years in East Coulee where his father worked in the coal mines. Doug’s father eventually purchased the Siemens family farm west of Munson where Doug and his siblings spent much of their youth.
Doug attended business college in Calgary and, after completing his course work, moved to Morrin to begin a career as the Assistant Secretary Treasurer for the M.D. of Starland. Doug met Janis Moe during this time and they were married in September 1968. Moving up north a few years later, Doug took the position of Secretary Treasurer for the County of Grande Prairie. In 1981, Doug and his young family returned to Morrin to be closer to Janis’ parents, Oddie and Jennie Moe. Doug partnered with Larry Nielsen to form the well-known and successful business, Nielsen and Siemens Agencies Limited. After 16 years, Larry and Doug sold the business. Doug embarked on a home business, Doug’s Contract & Bookkeeping and provided accounting and tax services to local farmers and businesses. He also worked in Drumheller for Meyers Norris Penny (MNP) providing his tax expertise and, in more recent years, contracted out to NAPA Drumheller, operated by his son-in-law Trevor Woodford.
Doug’s home business was still thriving at the time of his passing and, even when in the hospital, he was trying to ensure that his clients knew that he would take care of them once he returned home. Doug took pride in his work and in his relationship with his clients. He, at many times, provided advice and services above and beyond what he was contracted for. He was a man of integrity and had a big heart. Doug felt privileged to serve his clients and the communities that he lived in.
As well as being a respected local businessman, Doug was actively involved in the community of Morrin where he, over the years, volunteered with the Morrin Fire Department, was Mayor of Morrin, treasurer of Blooming Prairie Lodge and treasurer of the Morrin Agricultural Society. Doug was also elected to Morrin council for a three year term as councillor. Doug proudly served the Morrin community and greater Starland and Kneehill county areas for over 50 years.
Doug wrote inspired music, and shared his love for music with his family and the community over the years. He played guitar, preforming with his children and grandchildren, singing for weddings, funerals and other special events.
Enjoying life, Doug could see that laughter really was the best medicine. He had a quick wit and would use his humor to lighten almost any situation. He always seemed slightly amused, and made people comfortable and feel welcome.
Besides his loving wife Janis, Doug leaves to mourn his children Gayle (Roger) Church, Susan (Trevor) Woodford,
Steven (Julia) Siemens and Jennie (Jason) Berge. He is also survived by his mother Beth Siemens and siblings,
Jim (Jacquie), John (Barb), Ed (Norma), Ray (Alexia), Marlene Affleck and Aileen (Ed) Jackson. Doug was also the proud grandpa for 14 grandchildren and loving uncle for numerous nieces and nephews.
Doug was predeceased by his father John Siemens, daughter Christine O’Brien and granddaughter Allyn Church.
Doug blessed many people with his kind heart and helpful nature. He considered it an honour to serve his family and community. There are very few people like Douglas Siemens in the world, and his passing leaves us with a hole in our hearts, but is filled with his song. In all things, he used his talents to bless many people. As an amazing man and earthly father, he demonstrated the love of our Heavenly Father.

Reinhold “Jack” John

February 23, 2021

Reinhold “Jack” John Peterson, resident of Grande Prairie, AB, passed away on Tuesday, February 23, 2021, at the QEII Hospital in Grande Prairie, AB, at the age of 98 years.
Jack Peterson was born in Drumheller, AB, in 1922, to Jane Peterson (nee Cox) and Ernie Peterson. He was brought home to his father’s log house situated on the homestead he took out in 1905, when the Northwest Territories became Alberta. Alberta was one of the provinces that came into being at that time. In 1923, the family moved down to Hesketh, AB, where Ernie had a story and a half frame house built.
In 1927, Ernie moved his family down the Kneehill Creek to a house he built. It was from here that Jack started school, walking to the school in Hesketh. Jack claims it was uphill both ways and three feet of snow both winter and summer. The first school was in a room built on the north end of the hall. By the next year Hesketh School was built. It was in this room school Jack completed his schooling, graduating from high school. In 1933, Ernie had moved his family back to Hesketh. When Jack completed high school, he worked for farmers until 1945, when he took over his dad’s farm.
In 1947, he married Robina Hewitt from North Fork, AB. They had four children: John, Harvey (Pat), Janet (Ken)
Stevenson, and Randy (Norma). Followed by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In 1952, Robina and Jack became members of the Fellowship Baptist Church in Drumheller where they both filled many positions in the church, and have treasured the many friends they gained in the Drumheller church and sister churches. In Hesketh, Robina and Jack were involved in the community. Jack played on the Hesketh baseball team, and was leader of the Hesketh – Orkney 4-H beef club for a number of years. He was also Secretary Treasurer of the Hesketh Community Hall Association for a few years and the unofficial Mayor.
Robina and Jack travelled extensively, visiting family and friends. Jack accumulated numerous history books on his travels.
In the fall of 2004, Robina and Jack moved to Manor 1 in Drumheller. In 2013, they moved to Grande Prairie to be closer to family.
Jack is survived by his loving wife of 73 years Robina Peterson; sons: John, Harvey (Pat), Randy (Norma); daughter Janet (Ken) Stevenson; eight grandchildren, twenty-two great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
P.S. “This story is only guide, a short history of my life.” written by Jack.

Shirley Delores Buyer went to be with her Lord Jesus Christ February 24, 2021.
She was predeceased by her loving husband of 51 years, Morley, her parents and her siblings.
She leaves to mourn her children, Candace and Randy Stripling, Cameron and Tracy Buyer, her grandchildren, Tanner and Chilla Stripling, Jenna and Pablo Herrera, Eric and Kaylee Buyer, Tyson and Ashley Buyer and her great grandchildren, Gabriel and Ryan Stripling, Brynlee and Jayla Buyer, her close sister-in-law and companion, Nova Ohlhauser, and many nieces and nephews who loved her dearly.
Shirley will also be missed by an abundance of friends and acquaintances.
Shirley was born November 9, 1941 in Carbon, Alberta and Carbon was her town for her entire life.
She married Morley in 1960 and their marriage was blessed with their two children. She and Morley operated their farm and had various businesses together, the last being the Good “N” Plenty Restaurant and Catering.
Shirley was a very talented pianist and shared her talent not only as a music teacher to many but also as the church and community pianist and organist most of her life. In 1978 Shirley joined the staff at Carbon School as office secretary but all know she fulfilled many roles in the school until her retirement in 2006. Shirley loved her town and church and felt called to serve within both. She served on Carbon town council as a councillor and mayor from 1995 to 2013 and as a School Board Trustee. Shirley also served in numerous roles in her church right until her death. Many will remember her music, reciting Bible verses to her or being hosted in her home for a youth or ladies’ event. One of the greatest highlights in her life was becoming GG to her great grandchildren and was blessed to enjoy her time with each of them. During her last 5 years, Shirley resided at the Parkview Lodge in Carbon and formed some very special friendships. Her door was always open for coffee, fresh baking and friendship.
She was definitely referred to as an “angel” by many and was always there for anyone who needed her. Her life had a positive impact on all those who knew her and she will be missed by everyone. Her last wish was that the legacy she laid down for us to continue on.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the
Carbon Community Church.
