JOHNSON
Bert

April 17, 1938 - September 11, 2018

Bert Johnson of Rumsey passed away on September 11, 2018 at the age of 80 years. Bert was born on April 17, 1938 to Johnny and Mary Johnson of Rumsey. He was the “middle child”- #6 of 11 children. He was raised on the Johnson family farm, northeast of Rumsey, and attended Greenridge School in his younger years, and finished his Grade 11 in Drumheller, where he lived in the dormitory. Bert married Elaine Cameron in 1960. They had two children Duane and Gwen. During his life, Bert farmed with his brothers, Melvin & Ed at Rumsey, operated the Modern Machine Shop Allis Chalmer/Dodge dealership in Stettler with his oldest brother Clarence, had a livestock hauling business, operated the UFA fuel bulk station in Rumsey, and operated the Rumsey Hotel for a short time. But his true love was his purebred Simmental herd. He raised and showed cattle across Alberta for a number of years, and had many Champions, of which he was very proud. Bert was an avid 4-Her. He was a member of the Scollard Beef Club in 1948 & 1949. He was a 4-H leader for over 10 years, attended the 4-H Show every year until failing health made it too difficult. Even then, he would need a detailed update every year as to the winners and sale results. Bert loved to party! He enjoyed curling, dancing, coffee at the Rumsey Drop In, and always loved a great card game. Smear was his game of choice. Sadly, Bert suffered a stroke in 2007. From that time forward he lived in various lodges, with his final move being to Drumheller Continuing care, where he passed away. Bert was predeceased by one sister Betty Sinclair, three brothers; Mike Johnson, John Johnson, and Gene Johnson. Bert is survived by his son Duane Johnson and his partner in life Kelly Wheeler and her sons Aaron, Joshua & Carlen, his daughter Gwen Hampton and her husband Alan and his grandchildren; Landelle, Evan, and Levi Hampton, three sisters; Lila Meding, Molly Cosens, Linda Cosens, three brothers; Clarence Johnson, Ed Johnson, Melvin Johnson, his children’s mother Elaine Johnson, numerous nieces, nephews, and a lifetime of friends. A Celebration of Life was held for Bert on Saturday, September 15, 2018 at 4:00 P.M. at the Rumsey Community Hall. Family and close friends were invited to the Rumsey Cemetery at 3:00 P.M. for the Service of Committal. Memorial donations may be made in loving memory of Bert to Rumsey-Rowley 4-H Beef Club, c/o Kent Holowath, Box 127, Rumsey, Alberta T0J 2Y0 or Rumsey & District Ag Society, Box 60, Rumsey, Alberta, T0J 2Y0 Courtney-Winter’s Funeral Homes are in care of the arrangements.

SHUKYS
Alexander (Al)

May 15, 1934 - September 16, 2018

“Al” was born Aleksandras Augustinas Sukys, the eldest of 6 children born to Vanda and Stanley in Kaunas, Lithuania. Leaving their homeland in 1946, and in a two year journey by horse and wagon, the family migrated to Canada to settle in the northern community of Sioux Lookout, ON. Here Al’s love of fishing, hunting and the outdoors was born. The passion remained throughout all of Al’s life. At the age of 18, Al enlisted in the army and was soon after dispatched to Korea. He was immensely proud of his time with the PPCLI and it was on his return to Camp Petawawa that he met his wife of 62 years, Shirley. They were married in 1955 and over the next 5 years, their family grew to include David, Donna and Wanda. While building their family, Al was also building his career as a power lineman with Ontario Hydro. With a demand for linemen in Alberta, Al ventured to Calgary to set up home and the family followed in 1966 to start a long history in Alberta. Al preserved his love of Lithuanian culture by serving as president of the Calgary Lithuanian Club for 2 terms. Through his efforts, he established the Lithuanian Youth Club which resulted in an annual National Camp and performing Dance Troupe. He dabbled in politics for a time and always maintained a strong interest for the welfare of Canada. He continued his career as a Power Lineman with the City of Calgary through to retirement in 1994 and soon after moved to Cambria, AB where he and Shirley lived out their years in the company of family and friends. Al is predeceased by his beloved wife Shirley, brothers Antanas and Roman. He leaves behind son David (Donna), daughters Donna, Moochie (Tim), and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is survived by his sisters Wanda (Terry), and Irene, brother Henry (Debbie) and many nephews and nieces. To the many professionals involved in Al’s care these past years – thank you! Your compassion brought much comfort on Al’s final journey. In lieu of flowers and in honor of Al’s memory, please consider a donation to the Drumheller Legion #22 Poppy Fund, Box 147, 295 Centre Street, Drumheller AB T0J 0Y0. It would mean very much to Al. A celebration of life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 22nd at Courtney-Winters Funeral Home and followed by graveside prayers. 199 – 2nd Street West, Drumheller AB.

HAMPTON
Brenda Joyce (Metzger)

March 20, 1950 - September 27, 2018

Brenda Joyce (Metzger) Hampton, beloved wife of Doug Hampton, passed away peacefully at home with her husband by her side on Thursday, September 27, 2018. Brenda was born on March 20, 1950 in Innisfail, Alberta to George & Olive Metzger. She was the oldest of five siblings. Brenda took her schooling in Innisfail and went into nursing after high school, becoming an R.N.A. She worked in Innisfail and Valley View and then moved to Drumheller. Brenda also worked at the liquor store in Drumheller and cleaned houses for several years. It was in Drumheller that she met the love of her life, Doug. They were married in the Rowley Church on April 26, 1980 and made their home in Rowley. Doug and Brenda loved to travel and took trips to Vegas, Port Angeles, WA, Mexico and the Dominican, to name a few. Brenda had an eye for decorating and she loved to garden. Her poor health started to take a toll on her and for the past several years she suffered greatly. Brenda was very passionate about her close friends and family and always regretted missing out on special gatherings due to her health. Although Brenda would likely tell you like it was at times, she was
always the first to give you a hug when she saw you and actually taught the rest of us the value of giving your loved ones a hug every time you can. She wrote the following poem a few years ago when her health began to fail. Brenda wrote from her heart and the helplessness she felt.

DO YOU FEEL
Like a bug on a microscope, underdiagnosed
You’re hoping & praying-
They’ll find the right host.

Look on your life-four years ago
I’d like to know what happened
Do you know?

She was at that party-did you talk to her
She laughed loud & hearty
Her world in a whir

Of doctor’s appointments-research for sure
At screaming at God-asking-
Is there a cure?

Your blood tests are normal-your x-rays are clear
The Doctor’s keep asking
“Why are you here”?

From May to September-I have been ignored
My whole body has changed
I look like a board!
But they will ignore that-it’s a new panic strain
We diagnose quite frequently
It’s all in your Brain!

Brenda was predeceased by her parents, George & Olive Metzger and her in-laws, Sie & Viola Hampton. Brenda is survived by her husband Doug Hampton; her siblings Jessie (Don) Davidson, Russell (Debbie) Metzger, Kathy (Dale) Layden, and Cheryl Metzger, brothers-in-law Tom (Carol) Hampton, Terry (Lucille) Hampton & sister-in-law Shirley (Kelly) Bremer & numerous nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life will be held for Brenda on Saturday, October 13, 2018 at Sam’s Saloon (Rowley, Alberta) at 2:00 P.M. Memorial donations may be made in loving memory of Brenda to S.T.A.R.S., 570-1441 Aviation Park N.E., Calgary, Alberta, T2E 9Z9 or Rowley Community Hall Association, Box 14, Rowley, Alberta, T0J 2X0

Together they worked hard, danced beautifully, crafted, camped, travelled and created 30 years of treasured memories with many family and friends. Lorraine will be remembered for her compassion, candor, tenacity, sincerity and nurturing. Her love of family and friends, her strong faith and her willingness to be of service to others made her a very special lady.

To her daughters she would say, “I am not perfect”.
and as true as that may be, we do know.
“She was perfect for us”.

We would like to thank those who assisted Lorraine these past few months for their loving kindness. All was truly appreciated by Mom and Arnold and family. At Lorraine’s request there will be no service. Cremation has taken place. If friends desire memorial contributions may be made to The Salvation Army Building Fund, P.O. BILSON
Wendy Lynn
nee Sandercock

September 7, 1947 - October 12, 2018

Wendy passed away peacefully and comfortably surrounded by her children on October 12, 2018. Wendy was born in Seattle. Wendy was raised and lived her early life in Drumheller as a Sandercock. She attended high school in Drumheller, went on to attend the University of Calgary and returned to Drumheller to have her first children, Michele and Paul. After several years in Medicine Hat, she would return to Drumheller in 1976, met and married Terry Bilson, father of Brad and Todd in 1979. That same year the youngest Curtis, was born and newly formed and enduring family began on Cedar Crescent where she lived until her passing. Wendy’s first and most cherished career was to be a mother. She loved bringing the family together around special occasions. Wendy and Terry made the family home a place where all friends and family gathered to celebrate all annual events and life milestones. Her mission was to raise positive children and to pass on her energy and enthusiasm to everyone that shared time with her. She worked 30 years as a medical office assistant at Drumheller Associated Physicians and took great pride in her work and was admired by so many that she served until her retirement. When Terry passed away on Valentine’s Day in 2012, her dreams of doing all of the things that were on her bucket list were forever changed. She carried on, swimming at the Aquaplex sometimes 6 days per week and keeping an eye on her family as they grew. She would not miss participation in the annual Battle of the Sexes and made it a point to see that her grandchildren experienced the joys of learning to swim. She was a proud mother of 5 children who survive her as Michele (Spouse Mark Bieganek), Brad (Spouse Athena Winchester), Paul, Todd and Curtis (spouse Carole Henriquez) all of which completed post-secondary education positively affected by her encouragement and unwavering support. Her role would later grow as the proud Granna to grandchildren Vincent, Noah, Sierra, Maya, Juliet, Kiana and Santiago as she would continue to share her enthusiasm for current events, food, travel and life with them. Wendy was predeceased by her mother and father and survived by many nieces, nephews and loving family members from near and far. She will be dearly missed. A private memorial service will be held at a future date. The family requests that donations be made in lieu of flowers to the Canadian Diabetes Society, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta, or KidSport Alberta. SZURECK
Agnes Spence
(Nancy)

September 11, 1918
Airdrie, Scotland
- October 11, 2018
Drumheller, Alberta

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Nancy Szureck after 100 years of a life well lived. Nancy arrived in “The Valley” in 1946 as a war bride to join her husband Douglas Davis, where they raised their three boys: Peter, George and Wayne, until Douglas passed in 1963. Nancy found her new community of friends by joining the Rebeccas and the UCW and her Unit remained active well into the next century. Her Scottish roots ran deep, and Nancy was also able to make many friends through the folks she met in the Valley who were from “The Old Country”. Nancy will be remembered by many from her years of working at People’s Bakery. After her children left home, Nancy reinvented herself by moving briefly to Edmonton to take training as a Registered Nurse’s Aide and returned to the Valley to work at the Drumheller Hospital for some 20 years until she reluctantly retired at the age of 65. When she returned to Drumheller, she met and married her second husband, John Szureck and they spent many happy years together until John passed in 1986. Nancy spent her retirement years enjoying friends, family, travel and simple pleasures. Until her sudden and unexpected illness, she was able to remain in her own home, in no small part, because of the dedicated companionship of her step-son, John. She celebrated her 100th birthday there only a month ago. Nancy is remembered by her sons, Wayne Davis, (Vancouver) and Step-son, John Szureck, (Drumheller) and son George’s daughters Gwendolyn Vafaei (Husband Moin and children Mahdi and Eric), and Corina Aiello (Husband Joe and children Joseph and Brooklynne), by son Peter’s children Jason and Craig Davis (Wife Jen and children Braiden and Abi), Neil Davis (wife Sasha and children Easton and Ben) and Daughters-in-law Yvonne (Peter) and Karla (George). Nancy will also be missed by an extended international family and dear friends in Canada, Scotland and Australia. Nancy had a strong faith and knows she will be joining those who went before her: Parents, Husbands John Szureck and Douglas Davis, Sons Peter and George, Grandson Wayne, Daughter-in-law Pamela (George), Niece Gladys and her siblings, the Gardiner Girls (Margaret, Alice, Georgina and Gladys) and her many friends. The family wishes to thank Dr. Tlhape
and Dr. Kuschke for their exceptional care and to the extraordinary professional and caring team members in the Acute and Palliative Care Units of the Drumheller Hospital. At Nancy’s request, there will be no formal service and if you wish, donations can be made in her name to a charity of your choice.

McGHEE
Lois Lucile

December 16, 1931 – October 17, 2018

Lois Lucile McGhee passed away on Wednesday, October 17, 2018 in Red Deer, Alberta. She was born on December 16, 1931 and was part of the ‘younger three McGhee children; Lois, Mert and Joan. The older siblings were Calvin, Verna and Elzaida. She Loved the Turtle Back farm and the community of Orkney, where she grew up just west of Drumheller. Attending a one room school with her siblings, riding a horse or sleigh in winter, she would never entertain missing a day of school. An accident caused her left side to be paralyzed but this only slowed her down; it never stopped her. Lois attended High School in Drumheller and staying at the ‘Dorm’ was what country kids did. After she graduated, it was on to the University of Alberta; where she received her Bachelor of Education in 1958. She taught mostly Math Class and started in Delburne, then the Red Deer Composite High School, and on to Kano, Nigeria, Africa from 1969 to 1974. Then it was back to Alberta, to Fox Creek, Hanna and then on to her pre-retirement years at Elnora, teaching of all things ‘Grade School’. There were many stories of her teaching techniques; such as using a Cribbage Board to count and memorize. Lois was a World traveller and she said the only two places she wished she had seen were Newfoundland and Fort McMurray. When Lois retired in 1987, she retired to Red Deer and lived on Oak Street. She stayed active in the ‘Lois Club’, Golden Circle, the Christian Science Reading Room, and swimming at the Dawe Centre until her declining health required her to move into the Villa Marie Care Facility in east Red Deer. Here, in her final days, she was well taken care of by all the staff, and weekly visits from her nephew, Randy and partner, Marcel, and her good friend, Barb, who kept her up to date with friends, family and the world. We will all have our own stories of Lois, but mostly that the word “can’t” was not in her vocabulary. Nothing ever stopped
her from achieving her goal. Her mind was always hungry for knowledge and to explore the world, no matter what the subject or place and of course her question ‘why’. She so loved all her nieces and nephews. At Christmas, her goal was to shop and make sure all those special people had something from ‘Aunt Lois’ to unwrap. There are many stories about ‘Aunt Lois’, or Miss McGhee. A Celebration of her Life was held at Parkland Funeral Home, 6287 – 67A Street (Taylor Drive), Red Deer, Alberta, on Sunday, October 21, 2018 at 12:00 p.m. If desired, Memorial Donations in Lois’s honour may be made directly to a charity of the donor’s choice; as Lois supported many in Red Deer and Area. Condolences may be sent or viewed at www.parklandfuneralhome.com. Arrangements in care of Parkland Funeral Home and Crematorium, 6287 – 67 A Street (Taylor Drive), Red Deer. 403.340.4040 or 1.800.481.7421.

ORTHNER
Oswald

July 15, 1922 - October 21, 2018

A man of few words, great integrity, ability to repair anything, a willingness to help anyone, and a positive influence on those whose lives he touched, our beloved husband, father, papa/grandpa lived a good, long life. He had a heart for God and never feared the day he would go to meet Him. Although it is a time for sorrow, it is also a time for us to give thanks and be grateful that he was part of our lives for so many years and that we will see him again. Born in Serath, Saskatchewan, he was a WWII veteran, spending most of his time in Canada and, near the end of the war, serving in the Netherlands where he made lifelong friends. He began work as a farmer; became a beloved teacher/principal at Verdant Valley School near Drumheller; was a Commissionaire at the Royal Tyrrell Museum; and spent his later years volunteering at his church and the MCC Thrift Store in Kelowna. His pastimes included crossword, sudoku, and jigsaw puzzles and he spent years researching the Orthner, Huber, and Hubick family trees. He was predeceased by his parents - Jacob and Elizabeth; infant son - Glen; brothers and their wives - Sieg & Viola, Alfred & Verna; and brothers-in-law - Edwin Huber and Jacob Lang. Oswald is survived by Ethel, his loving wife of 64 years; children - Elaine Lewis (Darren, Meghan & fiancé, Michael), Marlene Joachim (David, Andy & Brady), Collin (Laura Lee, Thomas & Alexander), and Brad (Allison, Justin & Lindsey); sisters- and brothers-in-law - Ruth Lang, Myrtle & Herb Bachler, Elmer & Eleanor Huber; nephews and nieces. A memorial service will be held at the church building at Westbourne Place, 823 - 64 Avenue NW, Calgary, Saturday, October 27 at 3:30 p.m. There will also be an informal gathering held at Trinity Baptist Church in Kelowna on November 17 at 1:30 p.m. Donations in lieu of flowers may be sent to Samaritan’s Purse.

HUTTER
Hilda

October 25, 1912 - September 30, 2018

By Jürgen Schäfer
Delivered at the Drumheller
Cemetery at Hilda’s funeral
on Thursday, October 25, 2018

Here and today, on Hilda’s 106th birthday, the circle of a long and quite restless life closes. This life began exactly today 106 years ago, it was the year 1912. In Germany still reigned the emperor, the people did not suspect anything yet of future events such as the assassination of Sarajevo and the outbreak of World War I. The most spectacular event of the year was the sinking of the Titanic. Hilda was born as the second child in the family of a carpenter, 8 more siblings should follow. The outbreak of the First World War, the economically difficult time afterwards and the size of the family in such times, meant that Hilda had to grow up in extremely poor circumstances. Despite tireless hard work, the father could barely feed the family of 13. That’s why Hilda did not spend part of her school time at home, but with her grandmother in the country. Granny did run her own small farm and at least the food situation was better than in the city. Her father was in his sixties when he reached the end of his physical strength, he died shortly after the end of World War II. Perhaps did these experiences contribute to the development of the desire to break out of these living conditions one day? After completing elementary school, Hilda initially worked as a porcelain seller in a prestigious porcelain business in Paderborn. In 1930 at the age of 18 she began training as a nurse, away from her family in the Rhineland. After the training, she was now 24 years old, she moved to Kiel and took a job as a nurse in the hospital of the local university. She quickly worked her way up to the operating room nurse. She stayed in Kiel until 1952, where she also spent the time of World War II. In her free time she volunteered in a church aid organization and sewed shirts. She had to experience the bombing of the city, an important navy base, as the complete destruction of not far away Hamburg and the destruction of her hometown Paderborn including her parent’s home. She experienced the depressing post-war period with hunger and the greatest need in a devastated country. Her favorite brother died in a prison camp under unclear circumstances shortly after the war. All of this may have contributed to her desire to break out of her world and start a new, different and hopefully better life. In the summer of 1952, she read an advertisement in a newspaper promoting nurses for Canada. She applied and was invited to a 3-day test in Bremerhaven, today this would be called an Assessment Center. She obviously passed the exam because three weeks later she received the official invitation to immigrate to Canada. She had her 40th birthday on the Atlantic on board a steamboat to Halifax, where she arrived on 2 November 1952. One day later, on November 3, 1952, it went to Montreal for six months. At the local Royal Victoria Hospital she was not allowed to work as a nurse at first but had to do various support services, like in the kitchen and in the cleaning service, at the same time she went through language training. In mid-1953, she moves to Ponoka, south of Edmonton, where she takes up her first job as a registered nurse. The circumstances there do not seem to have pleased her. She does not stay there long and takes on September 8, 1953 her job as a nurse at Drumheller Hospital. Here she seems to have really arrived. In the following year she marries Jan Hutter. They met in the hospital; Jan worked there at the gate. One year later, in 1955, she is promoted to surgical nurse. Now she has finally reached the stable living conditions she had strived for. And she begins to enjoy the new freedom and opportunities that the now economically stable conditions offer her. In 1959 she flies to Hawaii on vacation. I was 10 years old when the postcard hit home like a bomb. I proudly told at school that my godmother was vacationing in Hawaii. The postcards immediately silenced all the skeptics in the family who were not convinced that her emigration to Canada was a wise decision. In 1960, she visits home for the first time. She obviously enjoyed being courted everywhere as the rich relative from Canada. For many years she spends the holidays alternately in Germany and on trips to the world. She travels to Alaska, Australia, New Zealand, Bora Bora, Hong Kong, Singapore, Bangkok, Fiji, Mexico, Disneyland in California, Las Vegas. It is noteworthy that she undertook all journeys alone, never in the company of her husband. It seems that her restless search did not find fulfillment with the achievement of stable economic and social living conditions. At the age of 97 years she is flying to Germany for the last time. Her sincere wish to spend her 100th birthday in Germany is not met by her relatives out of concern for the travel stress. But some circles in her life were closing. At the age of 95 she asked to be taken to Kiel to the university hospital. Everyone was puzzling what this trip meant. The trip inspired old rumors that not only material reasons could have led to her “escape” from Kiel. Also today a circle closes. Hilda, you carried me at my baptism almost 70 years ago and gave me to life, today I carry your ashes to the end of your long life. Dear Hilda, rest in peace.
