In Loving Memory Of
Thomas Joseph
KELLER

September 27, 1949 - March 15, 2018

It is with sadness and a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our father, Thomas Keller. Thom was born in Provost and raised in Castor, Alberta. He was the middle of eight children. He loved the outdoors and spent much of his childhood fishing and camping. Because of his love for the outdoors he became very involved in the Scout Canada program. Thom worked his way to eventually achieve the highest recognition a scout can receive in the British Commonwealth, the Queen Scout award in 1964. After completing High School Thom left to pursue a post-secondary education. He attended Holy Redeemer College in Edmonton for two years and then transferred to the University of Alberta where he successfully completed his Bachelor of Education degree in 1975. While teaching up north in Spirit River he met his wife Grace. They worked in several different locations for a few years finally settling down in the town of Drumheller. It was in Drumheller where Thom and Grace raised their two children Kirsten and Ryan. Thom was a very hardworking man. His career was very important to him. Not only was he a well-respected high school Biology teacher who exuded passion and creativity in the classroom; he was very involved in the school’s extra curricular activities. He ran the school Ski Club for many years helping to create wonderful memories for all the students that participated. He was also involved as the teacher representative for the student council. Many students still comment that he was the only teacher that made Science and Biology fun. He touched the hearts and minds of so many students and truly loved being a teacher. In addition to his demanding teaching career Thom also operated his own photography business. He kept himself very busy during many evenings and weekends taking family portraits and photographed hundreds of weddings over several decades. His passion and talent for taking exceptional photographs led him to be chosen as the main photographer for several Big Valley Jamborees where he photographed the who’s who in country music; an experience he was very proud of and often reminisced about. Thom also gave back to the local community by serving as a city councillor in Drumheller for 3 consecutive terms (12 years). He was instrumental in bringing to fruition numerous projects that helped to revitalize the city. Despite being so busy with his teaching career, time on council and his photography business he always made time for his family. Thom’s favourite activities were taking his family on winter ski vacations and spending the summers camping and boating out at Shuswap Lake. Thom was an extremely generous man and was always willing to help people. He was also a very wise man and you could reach out to him with any problem. He spent countless hours of his own time helping his students, his friends and his family whenever they needed support, advice, or help with anything. An incredible sense of humour, wisdom, strong work ethic, and passion for life are just some of the many positive traits that exemplified Thom Keller. Thom is survived by his daughter Kirsten (Gerald) Skocdopole, son Ryan (Shelly) Keller, four grandchildren (Thom’s passion and delight) Cassandra, Lauren, Preston and Emma, five siblings, Don (Dianne) Keller, Marlene (George- deceased) Vilcsak, Barbara (Ken-deceased) Keller, Orest (Carol-deceased) Zaharia, Pat (Larry) Wasylik, George (Kim) Keller, Armella (Charles) Gulley, nieces, nephews, beloved cousins, and godchildren, too many to list. Thom was pre-deceased by his wife Grace, his parents George and Marie Keller, brother Ken Keller and sister Carol Zaharia. Thom will be remembered as a well-respected teacher, a wonderful husband and an amazing father and mentor to his two children. He will be missed dearly by both family and friends and remain in our thoughts forever. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Drumheller Society for Recovery (Grace House), Box 1785, Drumheller, Alberta, T0J 0Y0. Prayer Vigil will be held Friday, March 23, 2018 at 7:00 P.M. at St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church, Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, March 24, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church with Father Fernando Genogaling as celebrant. Courtney-Winter’s Funeral Homes are in care of the arrangements.

BEETON
Janina (Jenny) Antonina

March 2, 2018

It is with great sadness that the family of Janina (Jenny) Antonina Beeton announce her passing on Friday, March 2, 2018 at the age of 83. Jenny was a talented pianist who lit up the room when she played. To hear her, you’d think it was her greatest passion, but it wasn’t. Family holds that spot. Her children being so close to each other through life was such a point of pride and gave her great happiness. ‘Just promise me that when I’m dead and gone, you kids stay close.’ Jenny happily wore many hats over her lifetime; bank cashier, drug store clerk, automotive counter clerk, piano teacher, service member, but the happiest roles were sister, auntie, friend and most importantly loving wife and mother. Jenny loved to have fun and appreciated every opportunity whether over a card game with friends, a dinner out, or putting on a big spread herself. She cooked a mean pot roast and she loved to bake. We celebrate the grand reunion she must be having right now with her beloved Berkley who passed in October 2005 and whom she missed terribly. Jenny is lovingly survived by son Ralph (Dianne), daughter Jackie (Dave), son Roger (Leah), six grandchildren Ward (Amanda), Ryan (Cheryl), Andrea (Lindsay), Mark (Megan), Chelsea (Kristian) & Kaitlynn (Greg), six great-grandchildren (Braedon, Jordyn, Jesalyn, Taylor, Gemma & baby Berkley), sister Anne (Chuck) and niece Nancy (Keith). Jenny touched the lives of many and leaves behind a large group of family and friends who mourn her passing. Memorial services were held Saturday, March 17, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at the Knox United Church, Three Hills, AB. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.sunsetltd.ca

LEIGH
David Lewis

August 6, 1940 - April 2, 2018

A proud resident of Drumheller since 1961, David Leigh passed away on Monday, April 2 in the Red Deer hospital. He had been a patient in the Drumheller hospital for eleven weeks prior, with one week added in Red Deer. He is survived by his sister Mary Leigh Warden (Barry); niece Christy Dinning (Darwin Forcier); nephews Rob Dinning (Rebecca; Lily) and John Dinning (Allison; Aden and Reid). David loved Drumheller - the long-time acquaintances, favourite shopping spots, drives around town and nearby valley routes. His friendly smile and always happy nature shone through whenever he stopped to have a chat with familiar Drumheller folks, all of whom knew David well and had known parents Bert and Irene Leigh since Bert’s transfer as Manager to the Bank of Montreal in 1961 and Irene’s teaching relocation to the Drum public school system. Those who were fortunate to have known David surely have taken from him some valuable life lessons. His daily attempts to be positive and kind were commendable beyond words. David was a special soul. Most people likely weren’t aware of David’s keen interest in sports: hockey (Montreal Canadiens); baseball (New York Yankees), and curling. He followed the Winter Olympics, kept a close watch on the results and was proud of Canada’s medals. Barry often called David to talk about hockey or baseball. David knew all the stats, present and past, could give near-accurate assessments of which team would end up winning and provide clear reasons why. David’s other passions were movies and music. Two weeks before his passing, with nudging from Mary, David discovered that he could sing. If there had been a casual, welcoming sing-along group for seniors in Drumheller, he might have been an eager participant. David would want to say thank you and goodbye to a few wonderful people: RobinLee, a special helper and friend, plus Kristy, Heather, Penny, Tina and Janice (all Helping Hands, Drumheller); Priscilla, as well as Jenna and Jen, and Dr. Rehan Masood, who realized there was a serious urgency (Drum hospital); Brian (Peterson’s Auto Body); Donna and Clark (H & H Optical); Amy (Centre St. Insurance); Alison, Don and staff (Rutz Agency); Paulette Harder, Joanne Dedul, Carmen Bliss and staff (BMO); Mandy (David’s premier nurse, Red Deer hospital); Dr. Chelsey Henry (Resident Dr., Red Deer, who offered her cell phone to David on his first evening in Red Deer so he could talk to his sister); Diane, Beverly, Donnell and Jessica (Helping Hands, Red Deer); Stan Schumacher; Linda Culshaw (Schumacher Gough); Debbie Laycock; Marcel Augey; Grace House; Judy and Ed Palm; Miro and Karen Guidolin; Don and Adrienne Dart; Shelley Hird; Debbie Nakonechny; Scott Manning; Janet Notland; Tess Broadhurst; the Yavis staff; the amazing Shaw cable technicians who pulled off miracles (with Jon Galliazzo, Jay Meyer); all the kind friends at Mapleridge Manor I, and Bob Dinning. A special goodbye to cousins Jean Fraser, Peggy Shuman and Gordon Rhine, and a loving goodbye to Mary, Barry, Christy, Rob and John. Many thanks to Sean Grande, Courtney Winters, for his sincere and friendly support. If anyone has been missed from this list, apologies. When David’s sister talked with him on the phone four days before his unexpected passing, she told him that he was a real trooper. David replied, ‘Am I? Well, ok...I guess I am!’ Indeed, he was. Many folks have shed tears over his passing. He will be remembered and missed. In memory of David, donations to the Drumheller Area Health Region would be greatly appreciated (351-9th Street N.W., Drumheller, Alberta, T0J 0Y1). Courtney-Winter’s Funeral Homes were in care of the arrangements.

JimmyMacdonald

Macdonald
James Harold

July 25, 1943 - April 14, 2018

Jim Macdonald (Jimmy Mac) passed away suddenly at the age of 74 in the Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary. He was born and raised in Drumheller, where he was known for his athletic abilities, particularly as a defenseman for the Drumheller Miners, where he was drafted for a farm team in Saskatchewan. Preferring the small-town life in the Drumheller Valley, he quickly returned, married and started a family of his own. Jimmy was a very hardworking man who held many different jobs. Predominantly, he worked as a heavy equipment operator in the construction and oil field industries. He spent many years working away in Fort McMurray and northern Alberta, and further afield in all four western provinces, NWT, and the Yukon. He was very proud of his work in the oil sands and proud to be a Union man of the Local 955. Following retirement, Jimmy returned to the Drumheller Valley in 2008 to be nearer to family. He settled into a little trailer in Wayne and got himself a little white dog, named Buddy, whom he loved more than anything! Buddy was treated to his own Buddy burgers and Dairy Queen ice creams. Jimmy and Buddy cruised all over town in his white GMC truck, and they were known to almost everyone in town – young or old. Although Jimmy was a huge animal lover, he also loved to hunt. It was a past time that he enjoyed with many friends and family. He proudly taught his grandsons how to shoot whilst still being respectful to the animals and nature itself. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and frequently attended their hockey games and had just gotten the pleasure of seeing his first great-grandson play. To know Jimmy Mac, was to love Jimmy Mac. He was a one of a kind guy with a great sense of humour, and family and friends were extremely important to him. He had a daily routine which began with coffee with his sister, Bonnie and Karen Dumancic. Then, it was straight to Yavis’ for breakfast with the coffee gang, and then to Brent Aagaard’s shop for a friendly chat. His afternoons were spent visiting his friends at his favourite local pubs. He always had his finger on the pulse and knew all of the daily happenings in Drumheller! He also spent a great deal of time maintaining the Wayne property, feeding the birds, deer and wildlife, mowing the grass, ploughing the snow, and spending quality time with the entire family tending the garden. He was an immense help to Bonnie – doing whatever was needed, and all of his friends and family knew that no matter what, they could always rely on him for his help and support because despite his tough guy persona, he had a heart of pure gold. Karl

June 26 1920,
Spitz bei Deutsch Goritz, Styria, Austria
April 09 2018,
Calgary, Alberta,Canada

With much sadness, we announce that our dear Dad and loving Opa passed away peacefully on an early spring day in April with his children by his side. His 97 years on this earth were filled with the love of his family and the company of many good friends along the way. Karl was born an only child and spent his formative years under the good care of his paternal grandmother in Austria. He immigrated to Canada at the tender age of 16 to help with the family farm in southern Alberta, working alongside his parents with all that farm life entails. Karl was a proud Canadian and answered his country’s call into the Canadian Armed Forces as a young man who knew very little English, but with his jovial demeanour and his infectious outgoing personality, he quickly made friends while stationed at Currie Barracks in Calgary. After the war he returned to the family farm and having worked diligently to save enough money, he was eventually able to purchase land and a homestead of his own in the same rural area. He returned to Austria for a visit in 1949 where he met Josephine Marie Graf. The two were married the following year in Delia, Alberta and started a family while running their successful mixed farming operation which continued on for 50 years, most certainly due to Karl’s love of the land. Being an only child, Karl wanted nothing more than to have a large family. His children and subsequent grandchildren brought him an immense amount of joy and he cherished the large family gatherings where all five children and their families could be together at the farm. Family meant everything to him. Karl was a willing and eager conversationalist – no topic was off limits and he would and could talk to anyone about anything. His children fondly remember having rousing conversations and family debates while helping with the many farm chores. In his later years while working briefly at the Royal Tyrrell Museum as a Commissionaire he was able to further exercise his customer service skills. He delighted in meeting new people from all over the world. Karl was active in his community, serving the church in The Knights of Columbus for 50 years and helping neighbours in the wider community when needed from barn raising’s to fixing telephone lines. Karl and his wife Josephine Marie had many friends whose company was heartily enjoyed with good food and good times. Karl was also very musical and played both the guitar and the accordion by ear. His children and grandchildren had the privilege of listening to their Opa play his accordion for them while they danced around the room on many occasions. Such special memories for all of us. Karl’s love of music continues to live on in the lives of his children and grandchildren. Karl Bund is predeceased by his wife, Josephine Marie Bund and survived by his greatest joys, his children Anne (Don), Heidi (Michael), Mona, Rose (Bill) and Tony (Theresa), his grandchildren Brendan, Hayley (Justin), Dylan, and Logan, and by his wee great-granddaughter Josephine. Relatives and friends are invited to join the family for the Funeral Mass at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church (151 3rd St. West, Drumheller, AB) on Saturday, May 5, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. A family burial will follow at the Delia Cemetery. A light lunch will be served afterwards in the Delia Community Hall (Delia, AB). The family would like to thank the staff at Tudor Manor, Okotoks, AB for their care and compassion as our Dad lived out his final years. A special thank you to the staff at the South Health Campus, Calgary, AB for their care and respect in Dad’s final days. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to any of the following; The Brenda Strafford Foundation LTD, 4628 Montgomery BLVD NW, Calgary AB T3B 0K7; The Heart & Stroke Foundation of Alberta & NWT Room 124 Professional Bldg, 430 6A AVE, Medicine Hat, AB T1A 2S8; South Health Campus 4448 Front ST SE, Calgary, AB T3M 1M4 or to any charitable foundation supporting long term care.

We little knew that morning that God was going to call your name,
In life we loved you dearly; in death we do the same.
It broke our hearts to lose you, you did not go alone.
For part of us went with you, the day God called you home.
You left us peaceful memories, your love is still our guide,
And though we cannot see you, you are always at our side.
Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same,
But as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again.
