MACPHERSON
Allan Johnston

May 15, 1924 – Delia, Alberta
February 15, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Allan Johnston Macpherson passed away peacefully on February 15, 2018 at Wentworth Manor, Calgary, at the age of 93 years with his wife, Mildred, at his side. Allan was born May 15, 1924 on the family farm at Delia, AB to Edith and Robert (Bob) Macpherson where he was greeted by two older brothers, Don and Ken. He spent his childhood and much of his adult life farming alongside his brother Ken. He was educated in both Delia and Drumheller but started his schooling in the one-room school house a quarter of a mile up the road from home. Throughout his life, wherever he was, Allan was always proud to call Delia his home. Allan’s father was a director of the Alberta Wheat Pool (1924-1941) and Allan became interested in the idea of farm co-operatives at a young age. He became a local delegate in 1954, was elected to the Board of Directors in 1957 and by 1978 was the President. Although Allan had many achievements with the Pool over thirty-two years, his greatest was in meeting and marrying Mildred Shier in 1964. They had a wonderful life on the farm but, after retirement from the Pool and health issues began to develop, they eventually moved to Calgary permanently. In 1988, Allan was inducted into the Alberta Agriculture Hall of Fame in recognition of his leadership and accomplishments in the grain industry. Allan will be remembered for his ready smile, his quick wit, his calm rational approach to issues and his steadfast love for his family. A kinder, more gracious gentleman would be hard to find. Allan is survived by his wife, Mildred; nieces, Margaret (John) Bertrand of Edmonton, Janet (John) Mitchell of Saanichton, BC, and Edith (Gerald) Printz of Gravelbourg, Sk.; nephews, Bill (Karen) Macpherson of Watervalley, AB, Bob (Sylvia) Macpherson of Cochrane, AB, Lloyd Shier (Colleen Wood) of Calgary and Wayne (Cynthia) Shier of London, ON. He also is survived by many grand and great-grand nephews and nieces. Allan was predeceased by his brothers, Donald and Kenneth and sister-in-law Margaret Macpherson as well as brother-in-law and sister-in-law Arthur and Cherrie Shier. A Celebration of Allan’s Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB) on Saturday, March 3, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow at the funeral home. Interment will be at a later date in the family plot at Delia, AB. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to a charity of one’s choice. Mildred and the family will always be grateful to the staff at Wentworth Manor for the excellent care and friendship shown to Allan. In living memory of Allan Macpherson, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

GARVIN
Gail

January 10, 1945 - January 8, 2018

It is with deep sadness that the family of Gail Garvin announces her sudden and unexpected passing, from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle collision near her home in Rockyford, Alberta, on January 8, 2018, just two days before her 73rd birthday. Gail leaves to cherish her memory her loving husband John, sons John Jr., Trevor (Sheila), and Troy, her grandchildren Amanda, Johnny, Ashley, Oliver, Dakota, Cole, and Danika, sisters Yvonne and Helen, brother Wayne, nieces, nephews, and a lifetime of friends. Passed before her were her parents Raymond and Louise, brothers Raymond and Frank, sister Betty-Lou, and beloved granddaughter Katelyn. Gail was born in Harbour Grace, Newfoundland, and met the love of her life, John Garvin, when she travelled to Toronto to pursue a career in banking. John had also travelled to Toronto from Calgary to attend school. East met West and resulted in a vibrant marriage and several successful family business ventures ranging from photography in St. John’s to a family restaurant “DunRovens on Main” in Rockyford. Gail’s all-embracing focus was family, and her sons and their families were her pride and joy. As a lifelong team, John and Gail supported each other, their immediate and extended families; many, many friends and their communities. At their 50th wedding anniversary in 2015, the impact she had on all was very evident. Gail was a very kind, wise and generous woman, who touched all who knew her, and she will be sorely missed. She would ask us to find a song or poem to share to help all the others who share this loss with us to help ease their way.

It broke our hearts to lose you, but you did not go alone.
A part of us went with you, the day God took you home.
If tears could build a stairway, and heartaches make a lane,
we’d walk our way to heaven, and bring you back again.
In life we loved you dearly, in death we love you still,
in our hearts you hold a place that no one could ever fill.

Our thanks to the Rockyford Fire Department, Emergency Medical personnel and STARS, and the doctors, nurses, and care team at the Foothills Hospital that are helping John with his recovery. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 24, 2018 at Rockyford Community Hall at 1:30 p.m. To send condolences, please visit Gail’s obituary at www.wheatlandfuneralhome.ca.

After a long, tiring battle with cancer and dementia, Harry went quietly in his sleep under the wonderful care of the team at Rosehaven in Camrose, Alberta. Harrolombus ‘Harry’ Gengos was born January 22, 1931 in Moree, N.S.W., Australia to Vasilios (Bill) and Calliope Gengos after immigrating from the island of Kythira, Greece. As the youngest of 7, Bim learned early on the importance of hard work and determination, and it served him well in a sales career spanning 2 continents and over 50 years. It was while he was working in Montreal, Canada that he met a young nurse named Ann Tweedy. They returned to Australia and married on February 16, 1968 and started a family. Harry worked full time while attending night school to earn his business degree with young kids at home. The family returned to Canada in 1975 and settled in Alberta where Harry’s success in agricultural sales and marketing all over North America provided his family a wonderful life for over 30 years. Storyteller, teacher, protector, and provider; Harry loved a good laugh and was always the first to lend a hand. Dedicated husband, loving father, beloved grandfather, favorite uncle, or cherished friend, Harry will be dearly missed by all who were fortunate to have known him. Harry is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Ann Gengos (Tweedy); his son Ian (Michelle); his daughter Nicki (Chris); grandchildren Nicholas, Andrew, Alex, Alora, Willem, and Hale; his sister Helen Frere; and many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins. A Celebration of Life is planned for 2:00 p.m., Saturday, March 24, 2018 at the Sheraton Hotel in Red Deer, Alberta. Please join us to share some stories, tell some jokes, and send Harry on his way with laughter and love.

ROPPEL
Helen Elizabeth

1924 - 2018

Helen passed away peacefully at the Sunrise Village Nursing Home in High River, Alberta on Friday, March 16, 2018 at the age of 93. Helen is lovingly remembered by her children Wesley (Lyn) Roppel of Surrey, Charlotte (Bob) Hedin of St. Paul and Darryl (Tammy) Roppel of Rockyford; her grandchildren Scott Roppel, Lisa (Vern) Boudot, Jennifer (Michael) Barbieri and Candace (Byron) Bader; and six great grandchildren; James, Jadyn, Logan, Sophia, Theoren and Harrison. She is also survived by her brother David (Wendy) Podborski of Nova Scotia, in-laws and many nieces and nephews. Passed before her was her loving husband Harold, who she shared 64 wonderful years of marriage, two cherished grandchildren Jeanine and Jordan Roppel, her brother Victor Podborski, and sisters Olga Stusick and Margorie Poole. Helen was raised in Rockyford and lived there most of her life. She worked as a Telephone Operator after High School until she married the love of her life Harold Roppel in 1946. They spent their life farming in Rockyford on the Roppel Family farm. Helen enjoyed belonging to the Ladies Aid of the United Church, Ladies Auxiliary, Girl Guides Association, Home and School Association and was Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, for two terms. In 1959 she was selected as Grand Representative for Utah for a four year term, which she really enjoyed and spoke of fondly. Helen was an avid gardener and won several awards for flowers and garden produce at the annual Rockyford Fair. She had a large, beautiful flower garden on the farm and continued to love her flowers when she moved from the farm to town. Helen was a very talented Artist and enjoyed painting portraits and scenic pictures. She took great pleasure in playing her favorite old time songs, on the organ, by ear. Helen enjoyed visiting and was a gracious hostess who always made you feel welcome. In the fall of 2002 Helen and Harold sold their home in Rockyford and moved to The Courtyard in Strathmore, AB, where she continued to reside until September 2017. In her 93 years, Helen saw many changes. She never thought she would see a solar car or the Olympic torch in person. She had a wonderful sense of humour which she carried with her until the end. Helen reminded family, during our last visits, “don’t shed any tears, I have lived a wonderful life and was blessed with a beautiful family. Remember all the good times we shared.” She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. We will treasure and always remember the good times. It was Helen’s wish that no funeral be held. To express condolences, please visit:

HODSON
Terence Anthony

March 24, 1935 - January 15, 2018

Terence Anthony Hodson passed away peacefully on January 15, 2018 in the Hanna Long Term Care Centre, after a lengthy battle with cancer. Terry as most knew him, was born March 24, 1935 in Birmingham, England to Albert and Lizzie Hodson. At the age of 15, Terry came to Delia to live with his Aunt Julia DeMott. After finishing his schooling in Delia, he worked for Butcher and Packer Supply in Calgary. He eventually returned to Delia working at the Delia Co-op, for Larken & Issac’s, and Gibson’s Farm Store before moving over to Delia Farm Supplies. In 1972, his mother Liz moved to Canada and they spent good years together prior to her passing. Terry was a friendly face at the shop for years before retiring at the age of 65 years to enjoy travelling. Terry made many trips back to England, nearly every two years. He also travelled to Ireland, Austria, Switzerland, Scotland, and Canadian destinations including the Maritimes. One of his favorite trips was to Australia to visit his cousin John Anthony and family. An avid coin collector, Terry always took the time to order special coins from the Royal Canadian Mint for all of his relatives. These are a special treasure for them to remember; especially at Christmas time. Terry was a life long member of the Legion, the Elks, and Masonic Lodge. He was always ready to volunteer in his community and held the position of cashier at Delia Elks Bingo nights for many years. He also volunteered with the Delia Volunteer Fire Department and the Delia Curling Club. Terry is survived by his many cousins: John Anthony, Mary and Jim Pearson, Carmen Davis, Dianne Meyer, Fred and Jerry DeMott, Brenda Harper, Carol Cooper, Tom Marshall, Garett Willington, Teresa Gilson, Mary Ellen Herzog and their families. He is preceded in death by his parents (Albert in 1957 and Liz in 1988) and infant sister Marjorie (1933). The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Hanna Extended Care Centre for the excellent care and attention Terry received during his stay. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Hanna Legion Branch #25, Box 1407, Hanna, AB, T0J 1P0, or the Hanna Ladies Auxiliary, Box 23, Hanna, AB, T0J 1P0. At Terry’s request, his ashes will be taken back to England to be buried with his family. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday March 24, 2018, 2:00 P.M. (Terry’s Birthday) at the Hanna Legion. All are welcome. Hanna Funeral Services Ltd., entrusted with the care and funeral arrangements. Condolences may be sent or viewed at www.hannafuneral.ca., 403-854-5956.
