BRAUNBERGER, C.G. (Buck)

August 3, 1924 - May 31, 2015

C.G. (Buck) Braunberger passed away peacefully at the Drumheller Health Centre on May 31, 2015 in his 91st year.  Born in Drumheller on August 3, 1924, Buck was the youngest of 3 sons born to Frederick and Gertrude Braunberger.  He grew up on the farm near Horseshoe Canyon, attended the local one room school and went on to high school in Drumheller.  As a young man Buck tried various jobs including driving truck and working at the Midland mine. He found his true vocation when he began carpentry/woodworking at Drumheller Woodworks where he did mill work, manufacturing and installing doors and windows in many houses and buildings in and around Drumheller. He then went on to house and building construction, finish carpentry, cabinet and furniture making. Buck was a fine craftsman and his work has stood the test of time. He met Thelma Jensen in 1944 and they were married June 18, 1947.  In 1957 they moved out to the farm and Buck began farming full time. He would farm in the Horseshoe Canyon/Churchill area for 40 years until retiring in 1997.  Buck and Thelma moved to Drumheller in 1993 and Buck moved to the Sunshine Lodge in 2013 where he resided until his passing. Over the years Buck volunteered his time to many organizations; he was a board member of the United Grain Growers local, Rosebud Gas Co-op, served as treasurer of the Drumheller Ski Club and had volunteered with minor hockey. For many years Buck was an avid curler, was a longtime member of the horseshoe club and during retirement was active with the Pioneer Trail Society where Buck could often be seen playing pool. He was known for his carpentry/woodworking which he enjoyed doing until he moved to the Sunshine Lodge. He particularly liked working on the lathe and incorporated turnings into many of his projects.  Buck was also known for his sense of humor and for playing the odd practical joke.  Buck was predeceased by his wife Thelma in 2006, his parents Frederick and Gertrude, brothers Lester and Henry and sister-in-law Louise.  He is survived by his son Wayne (Lily), sister-in-law Lucille Braunberger and cousin Adeline (Jim) Dougherty, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. At Buck’s request there will be no funeral services.  Flowers are gratefully declined.  Memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Drumheller Area Health Foundation. ORIENTPICKERING

PICKERING, Orient Jeanie

November 14, 1929 - June 27, 2015

Mrs. Orient Jeanie Pickering, a long time resident of the Drumheller Valley passed away after a lengthy illness in Drumheller on June 27, 2015 at the age of 85 years. Ora was born to Bill and Jean Waring in Calgary, Alberta on November 14, 1929.  Being that is was the “dirty 30’s”, the family had to move where the work was, so her schooling was in different towns.  Ora did fondly remember her years in Hanna going to school and growing up. Ora worked in various places throughout her life.  She worked as a nurse’s aid at a children’s home in Calgary, a cook in Hay River, but her longest job was at the Drumheller Hospital, working at food prep in the kitchen/cafeteria.  She worked there for many years until her retirement in November 1994. Ora loved crocheting.  She came up with designs right off the top of her head, no pattern needed.  She used this creative ability to refurbish dolls and stuffed animals for homeless shelters and youth shelters in Calgary.  Ora donated up to 50 of these at one time and many more, too many to count.
Ora’s interests were her family and friends.  A saying she often said about love was “they hung the moon and the stars”.  This is the way Ora felt about her son, Bill and her grandson Willie.  She loved them unconditionally and with all of her heart. As many of you know Ora gave of her time, money and especially food.  She never wanted anyone left out or hungry and always invited people to be around her table. When she lived on 3rd Street East, she met a Grace House resident in front of her house, this developed into a great relationship which continued until Ora moved into the Sunshine Lodge.  She took care of her “boys” as she called them and they took care of her. She spent her last years in the Sunshine Lodge and Continuing Care.  After settling in she was happy and tried to take care of fellow residents and new comers, helping them settle in, she was kind until the end. Ora was predeceased by her parents, Bill & Jean Waring, her sister Wilma (Ralph) Cheney. Ora leaves to cherish her memory, one son, Bill (Christine) Pickering, one grandson, Willie Pickering, one great grandchild, Abel Pickering. Two nephews, Ralph Cheney and family, and Ed Cheney. A Service of Remembrance will be held Friday, July 3, 2015 at the Salvation Army Citidel at 11:00 a.m. with Officer Jennifer Hillier officiating. A private family interment with be held later. If friends so desire memorial donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice.  Courtney-Winter’s Funeral Homes are in care of the arrangements.

HERMAN, Matilda “Tilly” Minnie

October 28, 1927 - Drumheller, AB
- June 29, 2015 - Drumheller, AB

It is with profound sadness that I announce the passing of my mom, Tilly, on June 29, 2015 at the age of 87. She lived her entire life, aside from a short period in Saskatoon, in East Coulee and Drumheller. Mom was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother and grandmother. She stoically faced life challenges which included the passing of her husband, my dad Bill, at the age of 55, the passing of her mother, Minnie, the passing of her son, Randy, and the passing of her brothers John and Tom. Her surviving brothers, Henry, Ernie and Eddie held a special place in her heart. Mom enjoyed watching sports. Much to my chargrin, she was always a devoted fan of the Calgary Stampeders and Calgary Flames. Mom was always physically active. She bowled for over 46 years, maintaining each year it would be her last year. She bowled not because she excelled at , as she did not, but because she enjoyed the people she bowled with. Mom’s two greatest passions were curling and gardening. She curled for over 60 years. She enjoyed the game immensely. Unlike bowling, she excelled at curling. She enjoyed every facet of the game, but most of all she enjoyed the people that curled and the friendships that developed. Each year she waited with anticipation for the ice to be ready. When the curling season ended, the gardening season began. She worked tirelessly in her yard growing vegetables and flowers. Weeds were her enemy and they never stood a chance. She was a wonderful mom. It was an honour and a privilege to be her son. There will be a family memorial at a later date. Courtney-Winters Funeral Home entrusted with arrangements (403 823 2666).

COMBS, Winnifred Maureen
(formerly Kikoak, nee Kelly)

 June 28, 2015

Winnifred Maureen Combs (formerly Kikoak, nee Kelly) passed peacefully to the Lord on June 28, 2015 at the Drumheller hospital. She was born in Innisfail, Alberta in 1937 and raised as a farm girl. Winnie trained as an LPN at the Innisfail hospital where she ran a ward until she moved to Inuvik, NT to pursue a nursing career across the north, from Baffin Island to the Mackenzie Delta. Among her regular nursing duties, Winnie also drove Bombardier B18 tracked vehicles, delivered babies, and assisted in dentistry. Her northern off hours were just as varied: dogsledding, fishing, hunting, archeological dig assistant, and visiting/singing/playing guitar or piano. She married a northern boy, Doug Kikoak, and they had Naomi. Upon returning to Alberta with her daughter, Winnie continued to nurse until she began working with people with developmental/situational challenges for a number of years. Her last profession was as a home care worker with the Drumheller Health Unit. Throughout her assorted careers, Winnie remained focused, conscientious and dedicated to her patients and her clients. After Winnie and Dale married, they enjoyed going camping for a few years, then gardening at home. They also spent time at the delightful private summer areas that Dale had created at their place in the valley; full of trees, flowers, birds, yard accents and barbecues. Winnie was a steadfast, highly respected and beloved friend to many people. Her pragmatic counsel and health advice was often sought and she’d lace her conversations with droll humour. Winnie’s faith in God and her discreetly prayerful nature did not waver throughout the numerous health challenges of her last few years. Winnie’s love lives on in: husband Lloyd Dale, daughter Naomi (Albert), grandsons Dylan (Stephanie) & Jeremy (Maggie), great-granddaughter Lily (her “Lily of the Valley”), brother Carson Kelly, sisters Aileen Ohlsen and Sheila Cassidy, numerous nieces & nephews, kindred friends Pat Symowniak, Don Tripp, Jane Dau, Alona Piecowye, and lifelong friends Martina Slaven and Arabella Rivet. A private family service will be held. Many thanks to Tamara and the Home Care Team, Drumheller hospital staff & volunteers, Stephanie Sierks, and all who have prayed, loved and supported Winnie and her family. The following poem was Mom’s favourite that echoed her pragmatic and spiritual philosophy about death and bereavement: “Miss Me-But Let Me Go (author unknown): When I come to the end of the road, And the sun has set for me, I want no rites in a gloom-filled room! Why cry for a soul set free! Miss me a little – but not for too long, And not with your head bowed low, Remember the love that we shared. Miss me, but let me go. For this is a journey we all must take, And each must go alone; It’s all part of the Master’s Plan, A step on the road to home. When you are lonely and sick of the heart, Go to the friends that we know, And bury your sorrows in doing good deeds. Miss me, but let me go.”

RITZ, Mary Florence

August 17, 1941 - July 6, 2015

Heaven became a better place on Monday, July 6, 2015 when Mary Florence Ritz, née Hart, was called home.  Mary was born August 17, 1941 in Swan River, Manitoba to William (Bill) and Yvonne Hart.  Mary was the 5th in a family of 6 little live wires.  Mary was predeceased by her brother Thomas, brother Leonard, mother Yvonne and father Bill (Gramps).  Mary began her schooling in Mafeking, Manitoba, and finished up graduating with honors from Notre Dame in Wilcox, Saskatchewan.  She had a love for all things beautiful which led her into a career as a beautician.  She graduated with her license from Winnipeg, Manitoba and took her first job in Dauphin, Manitoba.  It was not long after arriving that she met the love of her life, the man she would later marry and stay committed to for 54 years, Erwin (Curly) Ritz.  Erwin and Mary were married September 1, 1961 in Dauphin, Manitoba and 10 months later welcomed their first son, Faron Murray Ritz.  The young family soon moved on to Portage la Prairie, Manitoba where they had their second son, Leon Rae Ritz.  Curly took a position in Red Deer, Alberta which saw the family move there in 1966.  Mary continued in the beauty industry becoming an instructor to all the new hopefuls.  In 1970 the family was on the move again to Medicine Hat, Alberta where they had their youngest child, a daughter, Tamala Michelle Ritz.  In Medicine Hat Mary ran the local beauty supply company for many years.  However in the early 1980’s Mary decided to make a dramatic career change and entered the world of financial investing.  Mary was very successful over the years working for Pioneer and The Principal Investment Group.  Through all her success in the financial industry she was able to take her husband on some amazing trips over the years.  As Mary’s children grew and moved out, her and Curly decided to move closer to her siblings and father and in 1991 moved to Kelowna, BC.  They enjoyed their time in the beautiful Okanagan Valley but the pull of their grandchildren brought them back to Alberta. So in 1996 they moved to Calgary briefly and on to Irricana, Alberta where they spent their last 18 years together.  Mary loved to sew and make quilts and would spend hours in her sewing room making everything under the sun.  Mary was very active with the Irricana Ladies Lions Club, she was also very active with the men’s Lions Club with many orders of the clubs personal vests.  Mary loved to cook and can, and would put pretty much anything you could put in a jar.  Mary was always on the go. There was no slacking when she was around and she was always keeping dad busy doing something.  Mary’s home was always impeccably clean and you always felt welcome when you came. I’m sure she’s got a broom in  her hand in heaven.  If Mary was not keeping busy with all that, you could find her kicking someone’s butt in a game of Scrabble. Mary had a short but very courageous battle with cancer and she leaves to mourn her husband and best friend of 54 years, Erwin (Curly) Ritz, son Faron (Oksana), Dakota, Sienna, Kaysia, Zarrah, & Alex, son Leon (Chandra), Caitlin, Ryan, & Bex, daughter Tamala (Doug) Cersten & Brayden, Mary’s brothers Bob (Barb), Cliff (Fran) sister Dodi (Murdi) and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and relatives.  Donations can be made in Mary’s name to the Alberta Cancer Society. Service will be held Thursday, July  16, 2015 1:30 p.m. at the KIK Hall in Irricana, AB. Courtney-Winters Funeral Home entrusted with arrangements (403- 823-2666).
