ZACHARIASSEN, Richard Donald

January 15, 1958, Calgary, AB - February 8, 2015, Rosebud, AB

Richard Donald Zachariassen, beloved husband of Helen Zachariassen, passed away suddenly at the family farm near Rosebud. Richard (Rick) was born in Calgary, the third of five children of Raymond and Phyllis Zachariassen. Growing up on the farm was a joy for Rick – everything was interesting and exciting, especially if an engine was attached. Rick often helped his Dad and Herman Hansen, the family’s hired man; asking questions, taking machinery apart and learning how to put it back together. Rick’s formal learning started in Grade one at Severn Creek School in Rosebud. When the Rosebud school closed, Rick continued his education at the school in Standard. After graduating from High School, Rick worked in Calgary for a period but the farm life drew him back. Rick took the Farm and Ranch Management course at Olds College and, after graduation, moved back to Rosebud to farm with his Mom and Dad. Rick and Helen were married July 7, 1995 and moved into the house they designed and built together. Farming, of course, is not a nine to five job. Despite the long, busy days of working on the farm, Rick found time for fun. Fun for Rick was building new equipment, retro-fitting old equipment, and anything that involved sawing, drilling, welding, nailing, cutting and soldering. Rick made time for important community commitments: Rosebud seed plant, the Hall board, and the Lions Club. He was also one of the few who contributed over one hundred donations to Canadian Blood Services. Very important to Rick was his dedication to the volunteer fire departments in both Rockyford and Rosebud. Rick trained hard and worked hard. Everyone will agree that his commitment was an integral part of the new fire hall in Rosebud. Rick’s death has devastated his family, friends, neighbors and colleagues. Mourning his death and treasuring his memory are his wife Helen, his siblings Donna, Roy (Karen), Judy (John), Linda (Andy) and Helen’s family. Rick also leaves behind his beloved uncle and aunt, Wayne & Iris Dresser, of Carbon; his cousins and their children and grandchildren. Rick leaves to mourn his cherished nieces and nephews: Kayla and Courtney Zachariassen and their mother Laurie Zorniak; Matt McKee; Liam, Sara and Daniel Wong. A service to honour Rick and his love for his family, friends and community was held on Monday, February 16, 2015 at the Rosebud Church at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, a donation can be made directly to the Rosebud Fire Association (P.O. Box 602, Rosebud, AB T0J 2T0). To send condolences, please visit Rick’s obituary at www.wheatlandfuneralhome.ca

McLEOD, Amelia Martha

May 25, 1915 - February 13, 2015

Amelia McLeod known to her friends as Millie, to her five children as mom, and to her grandchildren and great grandchildren as Grandma and Great Grandma; passed away peacefully with family holding her hands, where she appeared content and knew it was her time to be with God. Millie , just three months short of being a Centenarian (as she would have been 100 on May 25, 2015) has seen more than most of us would imagine- from oxcarts and natives circling their tent home, horse and plough, to today’s computer world and space program.  Millie was a fantastic cook and loved sharing her meals with family and friends. She was well known for her roast chicken, angel food cakes from scratch and her fresh bread and buns. She was predeceased by her husband Neil of 50 years in 1988, her parents Ludwig and Michaelena, nine sisters and one brother plus a grandson, Scott.  She is survived by her two sisters Frances(Charlie), Helen and one brother Clarence, her children Doreen(Pius), Barry(Jan), Ron(Sandy), Sam(Sue), Shelley(Roger), twelve grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren and literally hundreds of nieces and nephews as she is a descendant of good Polish Catholic heritage (Samoleski). Raised in southern Saskatchewan, Millie and her husband Neil left the comfortable community of Claydon Saskatchewan in 1954, for a new start in the Delia area to accommodate the further education of their four children which was followed by the addition of Shelley in 1956.  As a couple they were active in the community and their favourite pastimes were dancing and playing cards. After Neil’s passing, Millie carried on as a widow with involvement in the church, 4-H, and seniors drop in centre of which they were both founding members.  Millie would frequently be spotted in the garden with her special cap on as gardening was an enjoyable pastime for her. Because of her almost 100 years; she was also predeceased by most of her friends and will be sadly missed by those remaining friends and family.  In memory of Millie’s life, donations may be made to the Delia and District Seniors Drop In Centre, Box 151 Delia Alberta, T0J 0W0.  The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at the Long Term Care in Hanna for their wonderful care of Millie. There will be prayers for Millie at 7 pm May 22 and a funeral Mass at 11 am May 23 at St. George’s Catholic Church in Hanna; followed by interment at the Delia Cemetery with lunch at the Delia Community Centre to celebrate her life. CASTONGUAY, Edmond

May 12, 1938 - February 28, 2015

It is with great sadness and very heavy hearts that our family announces the passing of our dear dad, grandpa and great grandpa, Edmond. He passed away unexpectedly on Saturday morning, Feb 28th at the Peter Lougheed Hospital.  Dad was born May 12, 1938 in Rosetown, Sask. He grew up in Rosetown on the family farm with his parents and 3 sisters. Ed is survived by his son Joe (Shawna) and daughters, Corrine, Bonnee (Murray) and Sandra (Marty). The loves of his life were his grandchildren: Ron, Ryan, Shaun Collett, Nicole (Tyler), Lindsey and Brendan Shanks, Mitch and Jared Weymark, Cort and Rhylan Castonguay. He was blessed to have 2 great grandsons, Jayden and Noah Matthews. Dad is also survived by 2 sisters, Marie (Peter) and Lucy (Tom) as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Dad will be dearly missed by his special friend Lena Kuntz. Welcoming dad to heaven with open arms is our beloved mom, Norma who we lost in 2006.  Dad grew up on the family farm outside of Rosetown. Due to health issues he was not able to continue farming after his father passed away. His career path took him not too far from the farming industry as he was employed by Federated Co-op in the Agro department. This brought him and mom to Drumheller with 3 small daughters. Their family was complete when their son Joseph arrived. They lived in Drumheller and raised their family where dad curled, had a position on the Catholic School Board, was very active in the Knights of Columbus and K40. Dad retired in 1986. He and mom spent many winters together in Arizona where they made many more friends enjoying retirement to the fullest. He loved to spend many hours watching his grandsons play hockey and baseball. He was their biggest fan!! He also loved to watch Rhylan perform in music festival and sing in various events.  He had a soft, kind heart and a big smile. He was a quiet man who knew what was important - family was the most important part of dad’s life. Anyone who knew dad knew that about him. We will miss him but take comfort in knowing he is with mom.  Prayers will be held Thursday, March 5 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church. Funeral mass will be Friday, March 6th at 11:00 a.m.  In lieu of flowers, in honor of Dads memory donations welcomed to Drumheller Minor Hockey.

HATHAWAY, Mabel Violet (Mate)

March 21, 1930 - Drumheller, Alberta
February 26, 2015 - Drumheller, Alberta

It is with great sadness and loss that we announce the passing of this great lady at the age of almost 85 years. The world is a bit grayer now for us. Mate was dedicated to her family, friends, and her jobs. She always looked for and found the good in everyone, and made very good friends wherever she was. With no children of her own, Auntie Mate was always there for her four nieces and nephews, and later our growing families. She truly was our second Mom. If you needed something, or someone to listen to you, she would be the one. Mate worked hard at everything, she never seemed to tire. She outlived every job she ever had, she was there until the doors closed for the day or the company closed for good. She never quit, never gave in, never complained that the job was too hard. Employers: Valley Trading Company(Sam/Sis Maltin), Capital Grocery (Steve/Kay Korpecki retired in 1960), the Grocery was then taken over by (Lenny/Joyce Nelson), Gas Trunk Line, Drumheller Apollo Lanes Bowling Alley (Sam/Sis Maltin), Bottle Depot (Gordon Hillman), Jim’s Greenhouse (Jim/Darlene Macintyre) , Sun Valley Farm (Jim/Rhona Goudy). Mate was lots of fun to be around. She loved to shop for the little ones and she always found special gifts for the rest of us as well, just a little something to remind us that we were all kids in her books. She enjoyed the holidays when we could all be together, especially with all the kids. Christmas cookie baking time
started about five weeks ahead of Christmas. Mate made a fabulous Thanksgiving dinner followed by trifle like no one else can make. She made the best cup of tea. Mate loved animals, long walks, mowing grass, picking berries, and listening to old time country music. Thanks Mate for the laughs and the wonderful memories. Mate is lovingly remembered by her sister, Mildred Morse. Nieces & Nephews: Barbara (John) Gallagher, Dale (Gwen) Morse, Penny Holmen (Ray), Dana (Kathy) Morse. Great Nieces & Nephews: Sean (Heather) Gallagher, Jason (Rachelle) Morse, Travis (Tracy) Morse, Kim Mulgrew, Kevin Morse(Mandy), Jon Holmen, Jesse Morse, Megan Morse. PLIVA, Linda Lou (Dau)

October 24, 1947 - March 8, 2015

Linda Lou Pliva (Dau), 67, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on March 8, 2015. She was born on October 24, 1947 in Trochu, A8, to Donald and Marjorie Dau. Linda received her teaching certificate and taught in Carbon and Trochu. Pretty soon a charming man named Don Pliva caught her eye. They were married in 1969, and four years later, their first progeny, Daniel Steven, was born in Three Hills. A mere six months later, Mom, Dad and Dan packed up their belongings and headed into the Great White North for the start of 23 years of adventures. They lived in Rainbow Lake for 3 years, then moved to the thriving metropolis of High Level. In High Level, they were blessed with a darling baby girl, Heather Louise, and their family was complete. The young family continued their journey back south, with stops in Peace River and Fairview. Eventually they moved to Stettler, where both Dan and Heather graduated from high school, and Don retired from ATCO Electric. in 1996, the family farm in Three Hills became available for occupancy, and the family made their final move back onto home soil. Linda was a very active substitute teacher in Three Hills and Trochu. Some of her favorite years were spent teaching at the Outreach School in Trochu. TODOR, Helen Alice (Sandell)

September 26, 1928 - March 10, 2015

Helen was born on the farm at Little Gem, AB. the only daughter of John and Eva Sandell.  A child of the depression, she shared stories of watching the crop go in, come up and then wither back into the ground. She claimed that she did not see rain until she was six years old. Shared stories of skies black with dust storms. Though times were hard she was always well dressed and had nice shoes. During her early years the Sandells came to Wayne during the winter months where John earned enough working in the mines to put in another crop. Eventually farming was given up and they moved to town permanently.  At 17 years of age Helen learned that there was need of a supervisor in the Rumsey area, at Two Valley View School. She took the job and moved to a community where she spent the next 50 years of her life.  The year she moved to Rumsey she met a soldier named Ernest Todor at the Remembrance Day Dance. A year to the day later they were married.  Helen and Ernest settled on the Todor homestead and had two children, Judy born in 1949 and Michael in 1953. They worked hard on the mixed farm and added two additional quarters making a viable small holding at that time.  Helen was widowed in 1963. Left with a teenager and a 10 year old, she decided to stay on the farm and continue to operate it with the help of her brother Doug Sandell and her mother Eva.  Together Helen and Doug farmed for the next 32 years. Judy and Mike grew up and had families of their own.  Helen was always a farmer. Nothing made her happier than a drive in the country. New calves in the spring and good crops in the fall made her smile. And a garden was always required.  Living in her small house in town was good and she was very happy in her Villa near the Sunshine Lodge.  As time moved on she adapted to life in Sunshine and then, later,  Hillview Lodge. She made many friends there and often enjoyed the entertainment and games offered.  Helen was predeceased by her husband Ernest, her parents, John and Eva and her brother Doug. She missed the time spent with her cousin Etta after her passing.  She is survived by her daughter Judy (Walter) Stoneman  and her son Mike (Carol) and her grandchildren Stacey, Darren (Karrie), and Becky (Ian) and great-grandchildren, Breanna, Sean, Corbyn and Blake.  Mom will be missed and fondly remembered by many. She always wore a smile and had a kind word. We miss you already Mom. Keep the garden growing and the flowers blooming.  In lieu of flowers kindly make a donation to the charity of your choice. Or plant a flower in your yard. A celebration of life will be held at a later date for family and friends.

MADSEN, Reverend Holger Nielsen

June 17, 1930 - March 11, 2015

It is with both sadness and joy of entering eternal life with the Lord, the family of Reverend Holger Madsen announce his death on March 11, 2015.  Holger will be greatly missed by his wife of 58 years, Helga; his three children and their respective spouses: Esther (Troy), Stephen (Catherine) and Jeffrey (Eloise) and ten grandchildren Ariadne, Danika, and Astrid Deibert; Hannah, Justin, Maud, Maura, and Fiona Madsen; and Cassidy and Lee Madsen.  He also leaves behind his dear sister Elisabeth in Prince George and many beloved nieces, nephews, family and friends throughout Canada and Denmark.  He was predeceased by his father Johannes, his mother Emmy, his sister Esther, and his brother Bent.  Holger was born in Edgewater, B.C.  His parents Johannes and Emmy had emigrated from Denmark to homestead in the mountains of British Columbia.  Holger spent the first part of his life helping on the family farm and enjoying many adventures with his brother and sister and assorted cousins and friends.  He was sent at age sixteen to complete his confirmation in New Westminster, and shortly afterward started working in the area and on the West Coast as a carpenter. After leaving his thriving construction company to answer the Lord’s call, Holger married a prairie girl (who was from Dalum, to be precise) in 1956. Together Holger and Helga would move a number of times as their family grew and Holger pursued higher education and ministerial training.  He served many congregations throughout British Columbia and Alberta.   Holger was, above all, a storyteller.  He was an inspired and dedicated wordsmith, and relished writing his weekly homily.  His stories resonated with all of his listeners, making the Gospel tangible and real.  He was a good listener, and always had time for members of his congregation.  As well, conversations over coffee were always pastoral opportunities for Holger. During retirement Holger focused on a number of different activities.  While he was instrumental in founding and organizing the Danish Canadian National Museum & Gardens in Dickson, AB, Holger also made time for his family and friends.  He had a craft and woodworking business with Helga for several years, and hosted a yearly craft show at their acreage in Sherwood Park.  He also provided his much-needed and respected insight and guidance to the Glory congregation during its inception and establishment.  In perhaps one of his most favourite roles, “Morfar”, “Farfar” and “Grandad”, he always looked forward to spending time with his grandchildren and telling them about his adventures growing up in the mountains and interior of BC. Please join us in a celebration of Holger’s life at Glory Lutheran Church, 53163 Highway 21, Sherwood Park, AB, Saturday, March 21 at 11:00 a.m.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made directly to The Danish Canadian National Museum & Gardens, Range Road 31, Dickson, AB, T0M 1V0.  Website: www.danish

“Well done, good and faithful servant!” (Mt. 25:23)
