SCHERMERHORN, Deborah (Dolly)

September 27, 1934 - August 5, 2012

Deborah (Dolly), daughter of Clarence and Deborah Bakken was born at Tompkins, SK, on September 27, 1934. She was to be the only natural child born to this union. Sometime later Deb and Clarence decided to adopt to complete their family. Dolly became the big sister to two small boys, Lenord Keith and Wayne. She had a happy and busy childhood helping with the many chores as well as tending to the boys. Clarence ran a threshing crew and raised Chinchillas to help with finances. Sadly, at the tender age of sixteen, Dolly lost her mother to cancer. Life was tough enough in the forties without having to raise 2 small boys without a mother. This experience is probably what molded Dolly into the strong caring woman that she became. Dolly left home at eighteen to live and work in Regina, returning as often as possible to see her family. She met and married Robert Schermerhorn in March of 1954.  When they started their new life together, Bob decided to find employment with the Arrow Oil Company working in the oilfield. At that time when the rigs moved, so did the families. They purchased a mobile home and away they went. It was a tough and exciting life as they traveled throughout Alberta, meeting many life long friends. It was in Stettler, AB, the couple welcomed their first child, a boy, Clarence Harvey. Moving from one oil town to another became their routine. While in Fort St. John, the family was completed with the arrival of their daughter, Betty Ann. Dolly told the story of when she was alone at the trailer with a new baby and heard someone trying to get in. She looked out the window only to  find a big brown bear eating out of the garbage barrel right beside the door. Now being from the prairies she wasn’t just too sure how to handle this situation. She thought about chasing it with a broom but soon realized this wasn’t the thing to do. So she took the kids to the bedroom and waited it out. I can only imagine the tongue lashing Bob got when he arrived home from work. Being tired of travel and insecurity of the oil patch led to the decision to take over the McPhee ranch which they purchased from Dolly’s aunt.  It was here they raised their family in a great community. Dolly became Jack! Jack of all trades. She always planted a huge garden, raised chickens, helped with the farming, ran with the kids and still found time to belong to the local ladies club. When the children were grown, they moved to Gull Lake as did most of their neighbors. They commuted to the farm for many years until Bob passed away in 2005. Dolly battled a vascular condition in her right hand for many years until finally they decided amputation was the only way to continue with any quality of life. She met this challenge as she had many before. Betty remembers her saying that you could sit around feeling sorry for yourself or get up, dust yourself off and keep going. That became the family motto. While convalescing from her surgery, an old friend came calling. Lorne and Dolly soon became close. It was good to see the sparkle in her eye and the smile return to her face. Dolly left Gull Lake to make a new home in Drumheller, AB.  Here she not only had a new companion but a whole new family that embraced her. Betty always teased her that it was supposed to be the kids that grew up and left home, not the parents. The biggest joys in Dolly’s life were her grandchildren, Jason, Ashley, Amy and Ty and her great-grandchild, Keagan. She answered to many names such as Granny Cat, Blue Gramma or just plain Granny. Harv and Betty thank Lorne and his family for embracing their mother and helping them through this sad time. They feel your love for their mother and know you are hurting as much as them. Harv and Betty and their families also thank everyone for attending Dolly’s service. Your attendance only fortifies their knowledge of the great community in which they live.

Dolly is survived by her son Harvey (Heather) Schermerhorn, Shaunavon, SK and his children Ashley Amy and TY, her Daughter Betty (Lloyd) Klassen, Gull Lake, SK, Grandson Jason (Lisa) Klassen, Leduc, AB and her Great Grandson Keagan, her Brother Wayne (Marion) Bakken, Tompkins, SK, Plus numerous in-laws and Nieces and Nephews. Dolly is Predeceased by her loving husband of 50 years Robert Schermerhorn, her parents Clarence and Deborah Bakken, her Brother Len Kieth Bakken, stepmother Stella Rayner Bakken.  The Funeral Service was held on Friday, August 10, 2012 at 2:00 pm from the Gull Lake Community Hall, Gull Lake, SK with Funeral Celebrant Bernadette Schneider officiating. Musical selection for the processional was “The Rose” and “The Tennessee Waltz” for the recessional. Soloist Louanne Schultz sang, “Love Can Build a Bridge” and “I Hope You Can Dance”. The ushers for the service were Conner Graham, Colby Graham, Pam Kirwan and Jenna Kirwan. The Interment Service was held at the Tompkins Cemetery, Tompkins, SK with the following serving as pallbearers, Brad White, Ken Kirwan, Rick Vaughn, Steven Metz, Cameron Graham and Lloyd Reed. In memory of Dolly Schermerhorn, donations made to the Autumn House, Gull Lake, SK would be appreciated by the family. Funeral arrangements were in care of Swift Current Funeral Home.

KEAY, James Bell

James Bell Keay was born on January 06, 1933, in Craigmyle, Alberta, and passed away August 20, 2012 at the age of 79 years. He grew up on the family farm overlooking Hand Hills Lake with his parents, Alfred and Catherine, his sisters Jean and
Irene, Uncle John and Aunt Betsy. He attended Lawsonberg School and Elmer School in the Hand Hills, and it was at Elmer
School where he developed his love for music and started to play the violin. Jim purchased the family farm and remained there for a number of years after his parents moved to town. In 1953, Jim
moved to Hanna and began working for Roy Embree. He proceeded to go to Calgary Vocational School and after 4 years
of learning plumbing and gas fitting, he received his proficiency license. Jim opened his own business and his mottos were “a job worth doing is worth doing well” and “a flush is better than a full
house”. Jim got a plumbing job in Delia and it was there at the C.I.B.C. that he met the love of his life, Jean Martin. On June 16, 1973, Jim and Jean were married in Delia. The most momentous occasion in Jim’s life was the following year when his daughter Bonnie was born. Jim cherished watching Bonnie grow up and
was known to show off his favorite picture of his beautiful daughter. On August 02, 2002, a dream came true and Jim became a grandpa when his precious grandson Brendan James was born. Jim was blessed with another sweet grandson, Jaeden Scott on June 28, 2004; and an adorable little granddaughter, who he often called “sweetie pie”, Avery Brooke, on June 03, 2006. The grandkids were all “so smart” in grandpa’s eyes and were the light of his life. Jim enjoyed playing the violin and over the years played for many wedding, anniversary, and stampede dances, jam sessions, various functions, fiddle contests, and just because. Jim loved driving out to the farm and checking on the crops and looking at the cattle. It was even more enjoyable to take the grandkids out in recent years. Jim was an eye watcher and enjoyed “sizing people up” by their eyes. He liked joking around and had fun playing tricks on family friends. Jim enjoyed playing canasta with friends and loved the challenge of playing checkers. A favorite Sunday routine was a trip out to Reg and Kathy’s for tea. Gardening was a relaxing past time for Jim. He took a lot of pride in his garden and always looked forward to that first feed of potatoes. No matter how hard he tried, Bonnie never developed his green thumb. Jim, Jean and Bonnie went on numerous trips which created lots of happy memories of fun times together. The highlight of his life was his family; he and Jean had a marriage that was ideal. Jim was a very loving, devoted and caring husband, father, grandfather and friend. Even when Jim’s mobility was limited he still made every effort to go outside and play with his grandkids, take them out, and attend their activities or special events. As his health deteriorated further he would still look forward to watching the kids come running around the corner of the hospital for daily visits and he was sure to phone them each night and tell them how much he loved them. Jim is survived by his loving and dedicated wife, Jean, of 39 years; daughter Bonnie; and three precious grandchildren, Brendan, Jaeden and Avery; sister and brother-in-law, Irene and Al Atkinson of Prince George, B.C.; Jean’s sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Ralph Lindley of Edmonton, Alberta; numerous nephews and nieces; and great-nephews and great-nieces; and many special friends. He was predeceased by his dad, Alfred Keay (1969); his mother Catherine Keay (1984); sister Dora Keay (1929); sister Jean McDonald (2010); and brother-in-law, Jack McDonald (1994). Memorial Service was held on Tuesday, August 28 at 2pm at the Handhills Clubhouse with Pastor Robert Grewe officiating. Jim was laid to rest in the Hanna Cemetery. If so desired, condolences may be offered at www.hannafuneralchapel.com. 403-854-4988

Turner, Barry Proctor
Nov.19, 1937 - Oct.4, 2012

Barry Turner passed away in the Drumheller General Hospital on October 4th after a short illness. Barry was born in Calgary, Alberta on November 19, 1937, to parents John Russell Turner and Kathleen Turner (Proctor). He grew up on a farm near Munson, Alberta, and later in Drumheller, Alberta, where he graduated from Drumheller High School in 1955. He spent some time working in Northern Alberta, and then attended Montana State University in Bozeman, Montana, continuing his studies at the University of Montana in Missoula, graduating with a Bachelor of Education in 1963. He taught for a time in Calgary before devoting himself to farming with his father, Russ, on the family farm near Munson. Barry was curious and interested in many things throughout his life, but his passion for sport was ever present. An avid baseball player as a youth, Barry played for a team from Munson in and around the Drumheller region for many years. He was a diehard Calgary Stampeders fan, savoring their halcyon days from the mid 1960s to their Grey Cup triumph in Vancouver in 1971, which he attended. He loyally suffered through the dark years that followed with the dominance by those “Eskimos” to the North. His real passion, however, was hockey. He started to play as a young boy, playing on many competitive level teams in the Drumheller area, including being a member of a senior team sponsored by a local coal company, the Drumheller Monarchs. While at university, both at Bozeman and Missoula, he played on collegiate teams there. And once playing for Bozeman, he teamed up alongside a future cultural icon of the 1970s, the motorcycle daredevil Bob ‘Evel’ Knieval. Barry remembered him as someone who seemed always to get into some ‘trouble’, being ‘evel’ after all, but also as a pretty good hockey player. Like many in Southern Alberta, Barry was an avid supporter of the Calgary Flames, and also loved to follow the world junior hockey championships during the holiday season, especially focusing on the progress of the Canadian junior side. But he reserved a special place for teams coming from Drumheller; the Miners, Allan Cup winners in 1966, and later the Drumheller Falcons, a Junior A team playing in the Alberta Junior Hockey League. He often reminisced about former Miners, such as Ron ‘Squeak’ Leopold and his puck wizardry, the skill and mayhem of Tony Kollman and the intimidating look of rearguard Ray Sawka. He took a more active role with the Falcons, involved in the operation of the club and often traveling around the province with them in support, even during their more difficult last years. Yet Barry was interested in many things, not just sport. He was a keen follower of politics and economics, and was a lifelong investor. Perhaps because of his studies in the United States, he was attentive observer of political happenings south of the border. Many will remember Barry’s spirited defense of one political position or another during kitchen table debates on Canadian politics and government.
Barry was sensitive to those around him, was always ready to help others and was a patient listener. His unassuming manner and quiet wisdom gave him the ability to provide balanced, thoughtful and non-judgemental advice to anyone who asked. He loved to reminisce about the past, but the retelling of these oft repeated stories often masked subtle lessons to be learned or different perspectives not always considered. His usually hilarious recollections of the past were rooted in his experience but spoke of someone who ultimately saw beauty in life and hope in the future. Barry leaves behind his sister, Shirley-Anne Thomson of Victoria, B.C., niece Mari-Lynn Thomson of Brooks, Alberta, and nephews John Thomson and his wife Keiko and daughter Maya of Vancouver, British Columbia and Colin Thomson, who lives in Montreal, Quebec. Barry has many Turner cousins in the Drumheller area, along with the Calverts from Edmonton, and Murrays living in Edmonton and on the West Coast. Barry’s family members would like to invite all people who knew him to attend his public memorial, celebrating his life at the Badlands Community Facility on Friday October 12, 2012 from 3-6 pm.               41c
