Growing up he attended the Three Hills School for grades one and two, then he attended the Manor School in Ghost Pine for grades three through nine and then back to Three Hills School for his last three years. At a young age, he started working for local farmers. In 1949 he started seismic work with Wilfred (Porky) Schmidt of Able Drilling where he remained for ten years. He then worked for A and S Drilling for eight years. In 1965 he purchased land in the Ghost Pine area and farmed until retiring in 1989. During that time he continued heading north in the winters working as a driller and tool push with Bertram Drilling. Leonard married Alice Barber of Carbon, AB. on October 30, 1976. With this union came the addition of a wonderful family - Alice’s three daughters and one son and their spouses and nine grandchildren all under the age of seven! One fond memory was her dad building a back stop so the kids could play catch and not break anymore windows. In 1965, the Wagstaff family moved to a new farm at New Brigden. Bonnie loved living close to Grandpa and Grandma Herron. Bonnie lived in Oyen to finish her grade 12. At that time, she met the love of her life, George Aaserud. She attended Mount Royal College in Calgary and earned a diploma in Secretarial Arts. After earning her diploma, she married George in Oyen, Alberta on June 26, 1971. George and Bonnie decided they wanted to live the rural life style and purchased a farm at Craigmyle, Alberta. They were blessed with three daughters Tarolyn Marie, Shandi Aleen, and Karalee Bonnie. Our family was once again blessed when Bonnie’s niece Jill Andrea came to live with them. Bonnie believed in raising well rounded and knowledgeable girls. She kept her girls busy; 3 4H clubs, all school sports, high school rodeo, curling, and softball. Bonnie was a 4H leader, curling coach, and softball coach. Bonnie was an exceptional parent. Her girls truly adored their mom. Bonnie was a fierce competitor. She loved the sport of curling and shared her love of the sport with everyone around her. She excelled at softball and loved to coach. She was an awesome pitcher. As an adult she learned the sport of horse shoes and competed nationally. She developed a passion for golf in the past 10 years in which she spent many hours with her girls. Bonnie loved spending time with her friends and playing cards.  Bonnie travelled a lot to be with her children, helping them out whenever she could. She was always teaching someone, whether it was how to slide at the broom or learning how to bake, she was a wealth of knowledge and encouragement. There truly was nothing she couldn’t do and do it well. She passed away with her family at her side. She will be dearly missed by her family. Harder, Leonard Luellan
October 8, 1929 - December 23, 2013

Leonard Luellan Harder. Born in Rosthern, Saskatchewan, October 8, 1929 – Passed away Drumheller, Alberta, Deccember 23, 2013. With piercing blue eyes, dark, wavy hair and a body hardened by years of physical labour, the young version of Len Harder resembled a character from one of the Western novels he liked to read. Handsome, confident and powerful, Len was a man’s man, resourceful, street-wise and someone who would always have your back. As a town constable, and as a correctional officer, he treated people fairly and with respect, preferring reason to rowdiness. However, if it was a fight they wanted, he was more than happy to “take care of them.“ While working on the railway in B.C. in 1947, Len joined a boxing club. He won all of his matches and was offered a chance to move to the States to pursue a boxing career. He declined, wanting to stay in Canada, but he never lost his passion for boxing. Len was a miner in Flin Flon in 1948 when he met his future bride, Ethel June Olson. Married in 1950, they were together for 48 years, moving all over the prairies before settling in Drumheller in the early 70s. She lost her battle to cancer in 1998. Dry of wit and quick to laugh, Len was a man of few words but could be coaxed to tell a story or two, drawing on the colorful characters and experiences he encountered in his career. He enjoyed being part of the coffee crowd at McDonalds, as well as playing pool and cards with his friends at the Pioneer Trail Society.  Above all, Len was a loving husband, a wonderful father and a loyal friend. He is survived by his son Hal and his daughter-in-law Elisabeth, who live in the States. To Len’s dear friend Betty Gallagher, as well as Paddy and Wilf Hunter, who welcomed Len as “chosen family,” – thank you for always being there. There will be a memorial service in June. Donations may be made to the Heart To Heart Society in his memory.

MICHAYLOW (NEWTON), Joan
December 11, 1944 - January 18, 2014

Joan (Newton) Michaylow of Olds, Alberta, passed away peacefully on January 18, 2014.  She is lovingly survived by John, her husband of 47 years.  Joan was born in Drumheller on December 11, 1944.  She lived with her family on a farm on the top of the Red Deer River banks near Tolman Bridge until 1950 when the family moved to Rumsey so she could start school there.  Some of her fondest memories were of time spent at the Rumsey and Morrin Schools where she made lifelong friends.  Being the youngest child, and the only girl, Joan was greatly loved, cherished and protected by her three older brothers. She moved to Olds in 1963 and started working in the dental office with Dr. Hertz until his passing.  She worked in a ladies clothing store called the Betty Shop, at the Treasure Chest Jewellery Store and the Saan Store.  Joan then found her dream job working for Home Hardware and she was with them for 29 years. Joan married John on July 9, 1966.  They lived in Olds for 26 years until 1989 when they bought a quarter section of land west of Olds where they raise buffalo.  Joan loved the farm life, hand raising a baby orphan buffalo, raising goats and spending time with her beloved cats. Joan loved to garden and was happiest when spring arrived and she could be in the garden centre at Home Hardware.  Joan never forgot her Rumsey roots and was a proud supporter of the Red Deer River Garden Club.  She was involved in the activities of the Rumsey community and was more than willing to pitch in and lend a hand whenever she could. Having no children of her own, her nephews and nieces were very special to her.  They included her in every occasion they could.  They are Keith Newton (Randi, Michael,) Cindy and Jim Krywcun (Derek, Claire, Dallas,) Debbie Newton, Darcy and Donna Newton (Kali, Tessa, Brenn,) Denise and Mike Daniels (Colten, Shaylee,) Brian and Amanda Newton (Brianna, Ashton,) Teddy and Cherilyn Michaylow, Christopher and Janet Michaylow (India & Maddox,) Dustin Michaylow.  She is also survived by two brothers, Dave (Judy) Newton, Trevor (Mary) Newton and by her brothers and sisters in law, Ted (Marilyn) Michaylow, Mike (Lucy) Michaylow, Lillian (Marvin) Vetter, George Michaylow, Jean Horyn and their children. Joan was predeceased by her parents, George and Margaret Newton, her brother, Allan, her brother-in-law, Wally and her sister-in-law, Rose. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at 2:00 pm at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #105, Olds with Harold Hunter officiating.  In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Olds Hospital Airbed Fund or S.T.A.R.S.
